Chapter 1 - The First Footsteps on Cold Concrete

The biting winter wind whistled down the narrow alleyway, carrying the scent of damp coal and exhaust fumes. Leo tightened his grip around the shivering bundle of fur pressed tightly against his small chest. His bare feet were completely numb against the frozen concrete, yet the sting of the cold was a distant shadow compared to the raw ache in his throat. Beside him on the tattered gray blanket, a pair of oversized, mud-crusted wool socks lay discarded, having just served a far more noble purpose than their original owner ever intended.
A sharp clatter echoed from the mouth of the alley, breaking the heavy stillness of dusk. A heavy pair of polished leather boots stepped into the dim amber glow of the flickering streetlamp. A man in a dark, weather-worn overcoat stopped abruptly, his gaze locking onto the small figure huddled in the shadows.
"What on earth do you think you are doing out here alone, kid?" the man asked, his voice sharp and laced with an aggressive edge of harsh suspicion.
Leo shrank back instinctively, his shoulders tensing under his torn coat. He blinked away the crust of dried tears clinging to his long eyelashes and glared up at the stranger with a fierce, defensive intensity.
"I am not alone. I have him," Leo whispered fiercely, his voice cracking with exhaustion and raw defiance as he pressed the brown puppy closer to his ribcage.
The man took two heavy steps forward, his boots crunching loudly over a patch of thin ice. "You cannot stay in this alley, boy. The cops or worse will haul you both away before midnight hits. Hand the dog over to me right now. It is nothing more than a stray flea-bag."
"No! You cannot have him!" Leo shouted, his voice rising in panic as he scrambled backward on the blanket, his bare heels scraping painfully against the rough brick wall. "He stays with me, or I swear I will scream until the whole street wakes up!"
"Quiet down, you stubborn little fool, unless you want to invite a real disaster," the stranger hissed, dropping to one knee to block the only clear exit from the alcove. "You do not know who owns this territory. And you certainly do not know who is currently watching us from the rooftop across the street."

Leo froze, his breath catching in his throat as a sudden, heavy metallic click echoed from the dark shadows above them.
