Chapter 2 - Shadows Above the Brick Walls

The metallic click reverberated through the narrow alley, freezing the breath in Leo’s lungs. He stared up at the dark, jagged roofline where the amber glow of the streetlamp failed to penetrate. A faint red light flickered twice in the gloom—the unmistakable lens of a digital camera or a targeting scope.

The stranger in the overcoat cursed under his breath, lunging forward with unexpected speed to grab Leo by the sleeve of his tattered winter coat.

"Let go of me!" Leo cried out, kicking his bare feet blindly in the air. The puppy in his arms let out a sharp, frightened yelp, burrowing its head deeper into the dirty fabric of Leo’s shirt.

"Shut your mouth if you want to live to see tomorrow," the man snarled, his face twisting into a grimace of intense frustration as he dragged Leo out from the recessed doorway and onto the open sidewalk. "You just triggered a silent alarm that is going to bring every corporate debt-collector in this district right down on our heads."

Leo struggled furiously, his small fingers digging into the man's heavy wool wrist until his knuckles turned white. "I do not care about your alarms! My name is Leo, and I am not going back to the facility, no matter what you or your bosses say!"

The man stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes widening in sudden, genuine shock. He stared down at Leo’s face, tracing the faint, jagged scar running just below the boy's left earlobe.

"Leo?" the man whispered, the harsh anger vanishing from his voice, replaced instantly by a chilling, breathless realization. "The biometric registry listed you as terminated three weeks ago in Sector Four."

"They lied," Leo spat back, his chest heaving as he clutched the puppy tighter. "Just like they lied about everything else."

Before the man could reply, the sharp wail of an approaching siren cut through the cold evening air, growing louder with every passing second. A sleek, driverless black sedan rounded the corner at high speed, its blinding high-beams painting the damp pavement in harsh white light.

The man grabbed Leo by the collar with a desperate urgency. "If they catch you with that animal, the experiment is a total failure. Run toward the subway tunnels now!"

May you like

Leo did not hesitate; he spun around and bolted down the darkened stairwell, but as his bare foot hit the first metal step, a blinding flash of white light erupted from the sedan's bumper, illuminating a chilling symbol painted on the brick wall directly in front of him.
