Chapter 13 - The Final Ascent

The cooling vent hissed as its heavy louvered blades swung inward, revealing a steep, vertical shaft lined with cooling pipes and thick bundles of fiber-optic cables. The air rushing down from the tower was freezing, carrying the sharp scent of ozone and high-voltage electricity.
"We have to go, Leo. Now," Iris urged, grabbing the silver flash drive from Marcus’s motionless hand and slipping it into the pocket of her tattered jumpsuit.
Leo cast one last heartbreaking glance down at Marcus, whose chest barely moved as he lay resting against the cold stone pillar. The boy gently adjusted the brown puppy in his arms, whispering into its soft fur, "Hold on tight."
Without another word, Leo scrambled into the dark vertical shaft, his bare feet finding purchase on the narrow metal rungs of an inspection ladder bolted to the wall. Iris followed closely behind him, her glowing amber veins casting a warm, comforting light against the dark, cramped metallic walls.
Above them, the automated hum of the broadcasting tower grew steadily louder, vibrating through the metal rungs with a physical intensity that made Leo’s teeth ache. Every few seconds, the deep, synthetic voice of the Syndicate leader echoed through the ventilation network, repeating the call for their immediate surrender.
"We are almost at the observation deck sub-level," Iris called out over the rising roar of the electrical generators. "When we pop the hatch, you need to run straight for the central console while I draw the security grid's attention."
"I am not leaving you behind again, Iris," Leo replied fiercely, pausing on a metal landing to catch his breath. His bare feet were bruised and bleeding, but the pain had long since faded into numbness.
"You aren't leaving me, Leo. We share the same network now," Iris said softly, offering a gentle, reassuring smile that made her luminous eyes shine even brighter. "Whatever happens to me up there, part of my code stays with you."
Before Leo could reply, a sharp, deafening explosion rocked the ventilation shaft from above. The metal floor beneath their feet buckled violently as a security drone slammed into the landing directly overhead, blocking their path with a tangle of sparking, red-hot cables.
Iris stepped past Leo with unnatural speed, her hands glowing with brilliant amber light as she grabbed the sparking cables with her bare hands.
"Go, Leo! Upload the virus!" she screamed, her voice straining against the tremendous electrical current surging through her arms.

Leo did not hesitate. Tears streaming down his face, he scrambled through the flaming wreckage of the barrier and burst out onto the massive, wind-swept observation deck at the very top of the tower.
