Chapter 6 - Through the Smoke and Shards

The shockwave of the explosion hit the grand hall like a physical wall, sending shards of crystal and heavy wooden paneling flying through the air. Arthur’s motorized wheelchair was violently jolted backward, slamming hard against a marble pillar. The air instantly filled with thick, choking gray smoke that stung the eyes and burned the lungs.

Through the haze of debris, Arthur coughed violently, his hands gripping the control panel of his chair to steady himself. "Evelyn!" he yelled over the roaring sound of spreading flames and collapsing structures. "Evelyn, where are you?"

There was no immediate answer. Only the crackling of fire eating away at the priceless tapestries lining the ballroom walls.

Arthur’s heart raced wildly. The betrayal echoed in his mind like a broken record—*She isn't Clara’s daughter... she’s the one who locked the nursery door.* The woman in the scarred grey coat had dropped a bomb of truth or deceit, and now, in the middle of a sudden, catastrophic blast, everyone had vanished.

Suddenly, a small, dirt-smudged hand grabbed the metal frame of his wheelchair from behind, pulling him hard away from a falling ceiling beam that crashed down right where he had been sitting moments before.

"I'm here, Arthur! Grab onto my jacket!" Evelyn coughed, her voice strained and tight as she fought to maneuver the heavy motorized chair through the burning wreckage. Her torn brown dress was singed at the hem, and soot covered her face, but her grip on the chair was iron-clad.

Arthur twisted around in his seat, his eyes locked onto hers through the smoke. The fear in her face looked entirely real, yet the shadow of the scarred woman’s accusation hung over them like a guillotine. "Who was that woman back there, Evelyn? Tell me the truth right now, or I swear I won't move another inch!"

Evelyn stopped pulling the chair for a split second, her dark eyes flashing with a mix of desperation and deep sorrow. "She is the architect of our shared nightmare, Arthur! She isn't your mother, and she sure as hell isn't a ghost. She’s the warden who kept us both trapped in the basement while Julian built his empire over our bones!"

"That makes no sense!" Arthur shouted back, coughing as a wave of smoke rolled over them. "She called you by name! She said you locked the nursery door!"

"Because she raised me to take the fall!" Evelyn screamed back, her voice breaking under the weight of a decade of suppressed trauma. "Now stop asking questions and steer this chair toward the service exit before this whole roof caves in on us!"

Arthur looked down at the brass key still clutched tightly in his fist. The emergency exit was straight ahead, but the service door leading down to the underground basement—the very basement the key was meant to open—lay directly beneath the burning grand staircase.

Before Evelyn could push the chair any further, a heavy metal fire door at the end of the hall was kicked open from the outside. Two figures in tactical gear rushed inside through the smoke, but they weren't firefighters. They wore unmarked black uniforms, and both raised silenced pistols straight toward Evelyn’s head.
