Chapter 4 - The Unfamiliar Bloodline

The heavy steel cuffs clicked shut around Julian Vance’s wrists with a finality that seemed to echo through the very foundations of the grand estate. The elite guests stepped back in horror, whispering behind manicured hands as the disgraced titan was led toward the exit by the federal detective. But Julian’s parting words hung heavily in the air like a poisoned mist, dropping the temperature in the room by ten degrees.
Arthur stared blankly at his father’s retreating back, his mind spinning out of control. She isn't who she says she is. Clara’s real child didn't survive the night.
The mechanical hum of Arthur’s motorized wheelchair was the only sound as he slowly turned his head to look back at the barefoot girl. She was standing quietly by the marble pillar, her dark eyes reflecting the harsh glare of the police lights. The fierce defiance that had sustained her moments ago had softened into a deeply heartbreaking vulnerability.
"Is it true?" Arthur whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely form the words. He gripped the joystick of his chair, inching closer to her. "If Clara Vance was my mother... and her real child didn't survive... then who the hell am I?"
The girl stepped forward, her bare feet making soft contact with the floor. She knelt beside his wheelchair, bringing her face level with his. Up close, the dirt smudge on her cheek couldn't hide the striking, familiar curve of her jawline and the intense, penetrating depth of her gaze. It was a face Arthur had only ever seen in faded, hidden photographs locked away in the back of his mother’s old diary.
"You aren't a Vance, Arthur," she said quietly, reaching out to gently touch the dark blue lapel of his suit jacket. "And neither am I."
Before Arthur could process the staggering implication of her words, the lead detective stopped walking toward the exit, turning back to address the room with the thick manila folder still clutched in his hand. He looked directly at the young girl kneeling beside the wheelchair.
"Miss Evelyn Sterling," the detective called out formally, reading from an official document inside the folder. "The court order is executed. The estate and all corporate holdings of the Vance and Sterling dynasties are hereby transferred to your legal custody, as the sole surviving biological heir of Clara Sterling-Vance."
Arthur’s breath caught in his throat. He turned his wide, stunned eyes from the detective back to the barefoot girl. Evelyn Sterling. Not a street rat. Not an imposter. The rightful owner of the entire empire that Julian Vance had brutally usurped.
Evelyn offered Arthur a faint, sad smile, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I promised your mother I would come back for you, Arthur. But I also promised I would make your father pay for every single year he kept us both locked away in the dark."
Evelyn reached into her pocket once more, pulling out a small, old-fashioned brass key and placing it directly into Arthur’s trembling palm. "This opens the basement safe under the burnt wing. The wing your father claimed was destroyed."

Arthur closed his fingers around the cold brass key. Just as his fingers curled tightly over the metal, the lights in the entire mansion suddenly flickered off, plunging the ballroom into pitch blackness, save for the strobing red and blue lights of the police cars outside. And from the dark corridor behind them, a slow, heavy pair of footsteps began to echo toward the grand hall.
