Chapter 2 - The Locked Vault and the Missing Heir

Chaos erupted instantly beneath the flickering chandeliers as the heavy oak doors banged against the ornate wall panels. The startled murmurs of elite guests morphed into frantic shouts, but Julian Vance remained entirely paralyzed. His mouth was still slightly open in horror, his grey suit suddenly feeling like a leaden weight holding him to the polished marble floor. The words the barefoot girl had spoken hung in the air like poison smoke—a ghost from a tragedy buried ten years deep.
Arthur gripped the armrests of his motorized wheelchair, his knuckles digging so hard into the leather they turned white. His wide eyes darted from his father’s ashen face to the small, dirt-smudged girl who stood beside him, completely unfazed by the sudden uproar.
"What did you say?" Julian finally managed to rasp out, his authoritative baritone cracking into something dangerously thin and unstable. He released his tight grip on the girl’s arm, stepping back as if she carried a plague. "Who sent you here? Clara died in the fire a decade ago. Everyone knows the truth."
The girl wiped a stray tear from her cheek, leaving a faint streak of dust across her pale skin. "Dead is a very convenient story for men who build empires on stolen ground, Mr. Vance," she replied, her voice carrying a chilling maturity that belonged to someone twice her age.
Before Julian could lunge at her again, the head of estate security, a burly man named Vance had trusted for twenty years, rushed up the marble steps, breathless and sweating profusely. "Sir! You need to come to the master study immediately. The biometric safe... it just opened itself. And the emergency broadcast system has been overridden from the inside terminal."
Julian’s head whipped around toward his chief of security, pure panic flashing across his stern features for the first time in his life. "That’s impossible! Only Clara and I had the master sequence, and her biometric profile was wiped from the system after the tragedy!"
"That’s not the worst of it, sir," the guard stammered, casting a nervous glance down at Arthur and the barefoot girl. "The files regarding the adoption of the young master... they are missing. All of them."
Arthur’s breath hitched sharply. He looked down at his own trembling hands resting on the control panel of his motorized wheelchair. For his entire life, he had been told that a tragic childhood illness had left him paralyzed and that his mother had perished trying to shield him from a household fire. He had lived inside this gilded cage of wealth, isolation, and medical dependence, entirely sheltered by his father’s iron fist. But hearing the security guard whisper about missing adoption files sent a violent jolt of vertigo through his mind.
"Father," Arthur whispered, his voice shaking with a terrifying realization. "What adoption files?"
Julian ignored his son, turning his full, murderous fury back toward the young girl. He stepped forward, raising a trembling hand to grab her again, but she sidestepped him with astonishing grace, her bare feet silent against the marble.

"You can chase me all you want, Julian," the girl said, her eyes flashing with a dangerous light. "But the real estate lawyer is already standing at the front gates with the original paperwork. And he brought the police."
