Chapter 5 - The Footsteps in the Dark

The sudden plunge into darkness sent the remaining guests into a panic, muffled shrieks echoing against the high vaulted ceilings as the flashing emergency lights painted the marble pillars in jarring flashes of crimson and azure. In the center of the chaos, Arthur gripped the armrests of his motorized wheelchair, the cold brass key pressing painfully into his palm.

Beside him, Evelyn stood up swiftly, her dark eyes scanning the shadowy corridor that led toward the private family quarters. The slow, rhythmic footsteps were growing closer, dragging slightly with a heavy, unnatural cadence that sounded chillingly familiar.

"Julian is already in cuffs," Arthur whispered through clenched teeth, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Who is walking down that hallway?"

"Someone who was supposed to be dead for ten years," Evelyn replied, her voice dropping to a tense, urgent whisper. She grabbed the back of Arthur’s motorized wheelchair, spinning the heavy machine around to face the dark hallway just as the emergency backup generator kicked in with a loud, mechanical hum.

The crystal chandeliers flickered back to life, casting a harsh, glaring light over the ballroom. The police officers had already evacuated the panic-stricken guests, leaving the grand hall eerily empty. Standing at the threshold of the dark corridor was a tall, skeletal figure wrapped in a tattered grey wool coat. The person’s face was heavily scarred on the left side, half-hidden beneath a wide-brimmed cap, but the posture was unmistakable.

It was a woman. Her eyes, wide and hollow, locked immediately onto Arthur.

"Clara?" Arthur breathed out, the word escaping his lips as an involuntary gasp. He tried to drive his motorized chair forward, but his hands shook so badly he nearly dropped the brass key Evelyn had just given him.

The scarred woman didn't answer. She raised a pale, trembling hand, pointing a crooked finger directly at Evelyn Sterling, then at the heavy brass key clutched in Arthur’s fist.

"Don't trust her, Arthur," the scarred woman rasped, her voice sounding like dry leaves scraping across concrete. "The real Evelyn died in the fire with me. She isn't Clara’s daughter... she’s the one who locked the nursery door."

Arthur stopped breathing. The entire room seemed to tilt sideways. He slowly turned his head to look back at the barefoot girl standing beside his wheelchair. Evelyn’s face had drained entirely of color, her dark eyes widening in sudden, unmitigated terror as the woman in the coat took a slow, deliberate step forward into the light.

"Evelyn," Arthur whispered, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical pain he had ever known. "Who is she?"

Evelyn opened her mouth to speak, but before a single sound could escape her lips, a deafening explosion ripped through the floorboards beneath them, shattering the grand windows and plunging the entire room into smoke and blinding fire.
