Chapter 7: Panic on the Grand Staircase

The sound of shattering glass and Maria’s muffled cry tore through the hallway like lightning. Eleanor forgot the documents in her hand, the papers scattering across the polished floorboards as she lunged toward the grand staircase with desperate speed. Her burgundy heels clicked frantically against the wood, her mind consumed by a single, terrifying thought: the baby.
"Maria!" Eleanor shouted, her voice echoing up the stairwell as she grabbed the polished mahogany banister and hauled herself upward, ignoring the sharp pain in her bruised cheek and the throbbing in her temples.
Richard was right behind her, his navy suit jacket flying open as he took the steps two at a time, his face hardened into a mask of pure fury. The calm, calculated diplomat had vanished, replaced by a desperate father whose world was violently unravelling at the seams.
They reached the second-floor landing just as the heavy oak door to the east wing nursery swung open. The room was shrouded in darkness, save for the pale moonlight pouring through the tall bay windows, illuminating a scene of utter chaos. The antique crib in the center of the room was overturned, its delicate spindles splintered across the plush rug. The mobile of silver stars lay crushed beneath the wreckage.
Maria was pinned against the far wall by a dark, bulky figure whose face was obscured by a heavy ski mask. One gloved hand was clamped tightly around the nanny’s throat, while the other reached relentlessly toward the blue wrap sling dangling from her chest, where the infant was wailing in absolute terror.
"Get away from him!" Eleanor screamed, any sense of self-preservation entirely vanishing as she charged blindly into the room, abandoning all reason.
She slammed her body directly into the intruder’s side, throwing all her weight against the masked assailant. The unexpected tackle caught the intruder off guard, sending the larger figure stumbling sideways into a mahogany bookshelf. Heavy leather-bound volumes tumbled to the floor in a chaotic avalanche, kicking up dust in the moonlight.
Maria gasped for air as the chokehold broke, sliding down the wall to her knees while frantically clutching the crying infant to her chest. Her green uniform was torn at the collar, and dark bruises were already blooming across her pale skin.
Richard didn't hesitate. Closing the distance with terrifying speed, he grabbed the intruder by the collar of his dark jacket, slamming him back against the wall with enough force to rattle the remaining picture frames on the partitions. With a swift, brutal sweep of his leg, Richard kicked the intruder’s knees out from under him, sending the man crashing hard onto the hardwood floor.
The ski mask was dislodged in the struggle, slipping halfway down to reveal a familiar, scarred jawline and a shock of thinning gray hair.

Eleanor froze, her breath catching in her throat as she stared down at the intruder groaning on the floor. It wasn't a hired assassin or a corporate spy. It was the estate’s head of security, a man who had served the Vance family for over twenty years.
"Director Vance... I had to," the older man gasped, clutching his bruised ribs as blood trickled from the corner of his mouth. He looked up at Richard with desperate, pleading eyes. "You don't understand what’s in the basement vault. The child... he isn't who you think he is."
