Chapter 3: The Cryptic Footage in the Dark

The rhythmic patter of the rain against the French doors sounded like tapping fingernails begging for entry. Eleanor felt a cold sweat break out along the nape of her neck, dampening the roots of her carefully pinned red hair. The mention of the nursery cameras at three in the morning triggered a sudden, sickening vertigo. She swallowed hard, forcing her throat to open, and lifted her chin with a desperate defiance.
"The cameras are outdated," Eleanor said, her voice unnaturally steady as she met Richard’s unblinking gaze. "They glitch. Everyone on the estate board knows the night-vision sensors pick up shadows and distort movement. You’re basing an accusation on faulty hardware?"
Richard didn't blink. He reached into the inner pocket of his navy blue suit jacket and withdrew a sleek, matte-black tablet. With a single practiced swipe of his thumb, the screen illuminated, casting a cold blue light across the sharp angles of his face. He held it out, turning the display toward her just enough for the ambient hallway light to catch the moving images playing on the glass.
On the screen, a shadowy figure dressed in a dark trench coat moved stealthily down this very hallway. The timestamp in the corner read 3:14 AM. The figure paused by the nursery door, pulled a small electronic device from a pocket, and bypassed the digital keypad with practiced ease before slipping inside into the darkness.
"The hardware seems remarkably clear to me," Richard said softly, his voice devoid of anger now, replaced by something far more terrifying: absolute disappointment. "The sensor caught every detail. Including the monogrammed cufflink that rolled out from under the nursery door when you dropped it in your haste to leave."
Maria shifted slightly, the baby stirring against her chest with a soft, sleepy murmur. The nanny’s eyes remained fixed straight ahead, but a subtle tension in her jaw betrayed that she was listening to every word. She knew what was on that tablet. She had been the one to find the silver cufflink embedded in the plush nursery rug the following morning, right beside the crib where the infant slept peacefully.
Eleanor stared at the glowing screen, her mind racing through a dozen desperate alibis before she realized the futility of them all. Richard had cornered her. There were no corporate secrets to hide behind, no board meetings to rush off to, and no clever legal loopholes to exploit. She had been caught red-handed in her own home, playing a dangerous game whose rules she no longer controlled.

"You don't understand what's at stake," Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking as the ironclad facade finally splintered. "If the board finds out about the merger... if they realize the company is leveraged against this house... we lose everything. Everything we’ve built!"
"We?" Richard stepped forward, his face inches from hers, his expression hardening into stone. "You didn't risk the estate for the company, Eleanor. Tell me the truth. Who were you meeting in the nursery at three in the morning?"
