Chapter 2: Echoes in the Mahogany Hall

The stinging heat on Eleanor’s cheek slowly faded into a dull, throbbing numbness, but the metallic taste of blood lingered on her tongue where her teeth had clipped her inner lip during the strike. She remained pressed against the wood-paneled wall, her burgundy jacket creasing sharply against the polished oak. Richard’s words hung in the stale air between them like a physical weight, heavier than the star-spangled banner drooping silently beside the grandfather clock.

"What are you talking about?" Eleanor managed to rasp, her voice dropping an octave as she fought to regain a shred of her formidable composure. She smoothed her skirt with trembling fingers, refusing to look down at the floor. "Richard, you’re letting this domestic staff manipulate you. Look at her. She’s an outsider. She doesn’t belong in our world."

Maria stood silently at the end of the hall, her green uniform blending into the rich tones of the antique sideboard. She gently stroked the back of the infant’s head, her thumb tracing small, soothing circles against the baby’s fine hair. The child let out a soft, contented sigh, completely oblivious to the intense confrontation playing out mere feet away. Maria’s calm demeanor was not born of indifference, but of a deep, unshakeable resolve that seemed to infuriate Eleanor even more than open defiance.

"Maria isn't the one who needs to justify her presence in this house, Eleanor," Richard said, stepping back just enough to create a cold, analytical distance between them. His hands slid smoothly into the pockets of his navy trousers, his posture radiating effortless control. "For months, I’ve listened to your excuses. The late-night phone calls locked in the study. The sudden disappearance of trust funds from the joint accounts. And now, taking your frustrations out on the very person keeping our son safe while you play corporate games."

"I am building an empire for this family!" Eleanor hissed, her voice rising again despite the warning look in Richard’s eyes. She took a step toward him, her heel clicking sharply against the floorboards. "Everything I do, I do to protect our legacy. You sit in your corporate tower playing diplomat, but someone has to make the hard choices!"

"Hard choices do not include tampering with the security logs of this estate, Eleanor," Richard replied quietly, his brown eyes narrowing as he watched her reaction.

The color drained entirely from Eleanor’s face, leaving her skin a pale, sickly gray against the dark red of her business suit. Her breath hitched in her throat. The security logs. Those files were encrypted, stored on a private server in the basement vault that only she and the head of IT could access. Or so she had always believed.

"I don't know what you're implying," Eleanor whispered, her gaze darting frantically toward the hallway window that looked out over the sprawling front lawn. The rain was beginning to drum a steady, ominous beat against the glass.

"Don't play games with me," Richard said, stepping closer once more, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Because while you were busy trying to frame Maria, I checked the cameras from last night. I saw who entered the nursery at three in the morning."
