Chapter 12: The Barrel of the Past

The jagged shards of safety glass rained down onto the concrete floor as the rifle barrel locked steadily onto Richard’s chest. The air in the vault grew heavy with smoke and the metallic tang of ozone, making every breath burn the back of the throat. Eleanor didn't hesitate; she lunged forward, grabbing Richard by the lapels of his ruined navy suit and throwing him hard to the floor behind the heavy steel base of the server rack just as a deafening burst of silenced gunfire chewed through the drywall where he had been standing a second before.

"Stay down!" Eleanor hissed, her adrenaline surging past the terror, replacing her exhaustion with a cold, razor-sharp focus that belonged to the corporate executive she had spent years becoming.

Richard rolled onto his shoulder, pulling a heavy-duty industrial crowbar from the emergency toolbox beside the desk. His eyes met hers, and in that fleeting glance, all the manufactured barriers between them dissolved. There were no cycles, no corporate boardrooms, and no fake memories—just two people fighting for their survival against a machine that refused to let them go.

"The ventilation shaft behind the mainframe," Richard shouted over the sound of the tactical team hammering away at the blast door hinges. "It leads up to the old carriage house behind the estate. Maria and the boy should already be waiting out there if she followed my contingency plan."

"What about you?" Eleanor asked, gripping his arm tightly as he pulled her up toward the dark, narrow opening in the stone wall behind the sparking server racks.

"I’m going to make sure they can't follow us," Richard said, his jaw set with grim determination. He pulled a small, heavy black device from his trouser pocket—a manual override detonator wired directly to the estate’s structural support charges. "The whole foundation of this house is built on stolen ground, Eleanor. It’s time we brought it down."

"You can't blow up the estate, Richard! You’ll be buried alive!" Eleanor cried out, trying to pull him toward the ventilation shaft with her.

"If I don't, Arthur and the syndicate will hunt us across the globe until every iteration of you is erased and the boy is placed back into the cryogenic grid," Richard replied, his voice terrifyingly calm. He gently pushed her toward the dark opening of the vent. "Go, Eleanor. Take our son and run. I’ll detonate the charges the second you clear the carriage house."

Before she could argue further, the steel blast doors gave way with a screech of tortured metal, crashing inward onto the concrete floor. Arthur Vance stepped through the smoke, his tactical gear dusted with soot, a smoking automatic pistol raised in his right hand.

"Family loyalty is such a tragic weakness, Richard," Arthur sneer, taking slow, deliberate steps toward them as his operatives swarmed into the vault behind him.

Richard didn't answer. He smiled, pressed the red button on the detonator, and shoved Eleanor backward into the dark, suffocating mouth of the ventilation shaft just as the floor beneath them began to rumble with a deep, catastrophic roar.
