Chapter 5: The Forged Genesis

The revelation hung in the damp hallway air, suffocating and absolute. Eleanor’s knees wobbled slightly, forcing her to lean heavily against the wooden wainscoting for support. The American flag above her seemed to sway slightly in a phantom draft, its white stars blurring into a meaningless smear of color. Birth certificate. Altered registry. The words echoed in her skull like a tolling bell.

"That's absurd," Eleanor whispered, though her voice lacked any real defiance. The panic that had been simmering beneath her skin now broke through the surface, turning her veins to ice. "Anyone could have used my office terminal. My password was saved on the desktop workstation. The cleaning crew, the junior associates—"

"The terminal in your private study requires biometric verification," Richard cut in, his voice flat, devoid of any mercy or hesitation. He stepped closer, casting a long, imposing shadow over her crumpled form. "A retinal scan and a thumbprint. Unless someone harvested your biometric data while you were asleep, you are the only person on earth who could have authorized those changes at two o'clock in the morning."

Eleanor stared at the polished toes of his shoes, unable to meet his gaze. Her mind raced backward through the fragmented memories of the past week—the heavy fatigue, the strange, dreamlike fogs that occasionally clouded her waking hours, the bitter taste in her morning coffee that she had blamed on bad beans. Had she done it? Had she altered the records herself during some sort of dissociative fugue, driven mad by the pressures of the corporate war? Or was someone else pulling the strings of her life while she slept?

"I don't remember doing it," she confessed, the admission tearing through her pride like rusted shrapnel. A single tear finally broke free from her eye, cutting a clean path down her powdered cheek, stark against the red welt left by Richard's hand. "Richard, I swear to you, I have no memory of touching the registry files. Someone is setting me up. You have to believe me."

Richard looked down at her, his expression softening for a fraction of a second before hardening once more into an impenetrable mask. He had spent years watching Eleanor manipulate boardrooms, charm investors, and crush rivals with ruthless efficiency. Vulnerability was a weapon she wielded just as effectively as aggression. He couldn't afford to fall for it now, not when their son's safety was hanging in the balance.

"It doesn't matter whether you remember it or not, Eleanor," Richard said, his tone chillingly pragmatic. "The paperwork has already been filed with the state. According to the new legal documents logged under your credentials, the child we are raising... is not legally ours."

Eleanor’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with sheer horror. "Not ours? What are you talking about? He’s my flesh and blood! I gave birth to him in the private clinic downtown!"

"Did you?" Richard asked quietly, pulling a folded legal document from his briefcase and letting it drop onto the antique table beside them. "Because the hospital records show that the mother who checked in under your name twenty-four hours after the birth announcement... used a stolen identity."
