Chapter 11: The Downward Spiral

The thick steel blast doors sealed with a concussion that rattled the teeth in Eleanor’s skull. Sparks rained down in a violent shower from the overhead conduit as the server rack behind Richard began to short-circuit, filling the vault with the acrid stench of burning wiring and melting plastic. Through the small reinforced glass window in the center of the steel door, Arthur Vance’s face appeared, distorted and furious, his mouth moving in silent shouts as his tactical team slammed the butt of their rifles against the metal.

"They won't get through that door for at least ten minutes," Richard said, breathing heavily as he turned back to the sparking terminal. His navy suit was dusted with gray soot, and a small cut above his eyebrow was beginning to bleed down his temple. "It’s reinforced tungsten alloy. But the server is frying itself. We need to get those archive chips out before the memory drives melt entirely."

Eleanor stared at the glowing blue cylinders, her mind reeling from the avalanche of revelations. Arthur. The family patriarch. The entire Vance dynasty was built on a foundation of human trafficking, cognitive manipulation, and corporate slavery. And Richard... Richard had known. He hadn't been an innocent bystander trapped in a troubled marriage; he was part of the bloodline, trained from birth to manage the cycle.

"You knew," Eleanor said, her voice barely audible above the screech of the failing machinery. She stepped away from him, her hands trembling as she wiped soot from the shoulder of her burgundy suit. "From the very beginning. You knew about Project Genesis. You knew I was just a manufactured iteration."

Richard paused, his hand hovering over the cryogenic cylinder. He looked up at her, his brown eyes filled with a heavy, exhausting sorrow that he had hidden behind his authoritative facade for years. "I found out during our third year of marriage, Eleanor. I found the files in my father’s personal safe after his supposed death."

"And you didn't tell me?" Eleanor’s voice broke, a sharp wave of betrayal washing away her fear. "You let me live in a lie? You let me believe I was building a career, building a family, while you stood by and watched the board drug me every five years?"

"If I had told you, the board would have wiped you immediately," Richard said, his voice dropping to a desperate, raw plea as he stepped toward her. "It was the only way to keep you alive. Every time you showed signs of remembering your past life, I had to cover for you, redirect the board’s suspicion, and play the cold, detached husband so they wouldn't suspect we were working against them from the inside."

Eleanor stared at him, the pieces of his harsh behavior finally falling into place. The sudden slaps, the cold distance, the strict control—they weren't acts of cruelty; they were desperate survival tactics designed to keep the surveillance algorithms from flagging her as a rogue asset.

"The baby..." Eleanor whispered, her hand flying to her mouth as the ultimate horror dawned on her. "If the syndicate controls the adoptions, if the child was bought on the black market... who is he, Richard? Whose child is he really?"

Richard looked down at the metal archive chip in his hand, his expression darkening into a grim mask. "He isn't from an orphanage, Eleanor. He’s the biological clone of the original founder of the syndicate—the man who started Project Genesis fifty years ago."

Before Eleanor could process the staggering weight of that revelation, the small glass window in the blast door shattered outward with a sharp explosion, and the barrel of a tactical rifle poked through the opening, aimed directly at Richard’s chest.
