Chapter 4: Shadows of the Boardroom

The heavy silence that followed Richard’s question was broken only by the grandfather clock ticking methodically in the corner of the hall. Eleanor’s eyes darted frantically between Richard’s unyielding face and Maria’s quiet, protective stance near the stairs. The walls of the grand hallway seemed to close in, the rich wood paneling turning from a symbol of heritage into a suffocating cage.

"There was no one," Eleanor lied, though the conviction had completely drained from her voice, leaving behind a hollow, desperate shell. She reached out, her fingers weakly grasping the lapel of Richard’s navy suit. "Richard, please. You have to trust me. The merger with Vanguard Capital is complex. I had to review the physical paper files because the digital network was compromised. I went to the nursery because it’s the quietest room on this wing."

"Stop lying," Richard interrupted, his voice cutting through her frantic rationalization like a scalpel. He gently but firmly peeled her fingers away from his suit jacket, stepping back to create an insurmountable chasm between them. "Vanguard Capital pulled out of the merger three days ago. I received the official notice while you were still drafting your press releases. So don't talk to me about reviewing files for a deal that no longer exists."

Eleanor staggered backward as if struck a second time, the breath knocked from her lungs. Vanguard had pulled out? Three days ago? That meant the entire executive board had been keeping her in the dark, treating her like a liability in her own company. Her life’s work, the corporation she had clawed her way to the top of, was slipping through her fingers while she was consumed by petty paranoia at home.

"That's... that's impossible," Eleanor stammered, her hands flying to her temples as a sharp migraine began to hammer behind her eyes. "I spoke with the senior partners yesterday morning. They assured me—"

"They are loyal to the board, Eleanor, not to your delusions," Richard said coldly, slipping the tablet back into his inner pocket. He turned his attention briefly toward Maria, offering a subtle, reassuring nod. "Take the boy to the east wing nursery, Maria. Lock the doors. No one enters without my direct authorization."

"Yes, Mr. Vance," Maria replied, her voice steady and clear. She turned away from them, her green uniform rustling softly as she carefully navigated the grand staircase, shielding the infant with her body as if guarding a sacred relic from the gathering storm.

Eleanor watched them go with a surge of helpless fury, but she lacked the energy to chase after them. The betrayal by her business partners combined with Richard’s cold detachment left her stranded in a wasteland of her own creation. She turned back to her husband, her eyes burning with a desperate, frantic intensity.

"If Vanguard pulled out, then who..." Eleanor started, her voice trailing off as a cold realization began to dawn in the back of her mind. If the corporate merger was a ghost, then her midnight visits to the nursery had nothing to do with business.

Richard looked down at her, a dark shadow crossing his features as he delivered the final blow. "Exactly, Eleanor. Now tell me why someone tried to alter our son's birth certificate in the registry office using your security clearance."
