Chapter 1: The Strike That Split the House

The heavy leather shoe of Eleanor Vance collided with the polished wainscoting, missing the hem of Maria’s green maid uniform by a fraction of an inch. The mahogany hallway echoed with the sharp slap of a patent leather heel against timber, vibrating right beneath the folds of the heavy American flag that hung motionless against the wood-paneled wall. Eleanor’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson, matching the heavy burgundy business suit that felt suddenly too tight across her heaving chest. Her red hair, usually pinned into a sleek, impenetrable bun, was beginning to unravel at the temples, damp strands clinging to her powdered forehead.

"Don’t you dare hold him!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking with a manic edge that rattled the framed portraits of ancestral judges lining the corridor.

Maria did not flinch. Standing completely still, her posture rigid yet deeply protective, she adjusted the blue fabric wrap that bound the infant tightly against her chest. The baby’s dark eyes stared out from the cotton cocoon, blinking slowly in the harsh light of the crystal wall sconces, entirely immune to the storm brewing above him.

"He’s my son, Maria! You have no right!" Eleanor took a stumbling step forward, her manicured finger trembling as she jabbed it violently toward the nursemaid’s face. "She’s trying to turn him against me! I’ve seen the way he looks at her when I enter the nursery! She’s whispering poison into his ear before he can even speak!"

From the shadows near the curving staircase, Richard Vance stepped into the light. His navy blue suit was immaculate, the red silk tie perfectly knotted against his crisp white collar. His brown hair was neatly combed, his expression a mask of cold, terrifying authority. He didn't raise his voice when he moved, but the air in the hallway seemed to drop ten degrees as he closed the distance between them.

Eleanor spun around, her mouth opening to hurl another accusation, but the words died in her throat.

The sound of Richard’s open palm striking Eleanor’s cheek was like a gunshot in the enclosed space. The force of the blow spun her halfway around, sending her sprawling against the wall. She rebounded, clutching her burning cheek with both hands, her eyes wide with absolute, paralyzed disbelief.

Richard stood directly over her, his chest rising and falling in slow, measured breaths. "Enough!" he commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that brooked no argument.

Eleanor stared up at him, tears finally pooling in her eyes, not from sorrow, but from a profound, burning humiliation. She opened her mouth to speak, but Richard leaned in, his face inches from hers, his gaze piercing straight through her defenses.

"I saw what you did," Richard whispered, his tone dripping with a chilling finality that froze the blood in Eleanor's veins.
