Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room

The interrogation room was painfully sterile. The walls were painted a dull, depressing shade of institutional gray, illuminated by a harsh fluorescent ceiling light that hummed with a low, agonizing frequency. A single metal table stood bolted to the center of the scuffed linoleum floor, flanked by two matching chairs. In front of Damian sat a thick manila folder labeled with a federal case number and his own name in bold red letters.

Damian sat with his cuffed hands resting flat on the cold metal surface. His black suit, once tailored to perfection, was now rumpled and stained from the chaos of the previous evening. His dark hair was disheveled, and dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes. He stared blankly at the metal table, replaying the horrifying sequence of events over and over in his mind.

The heavy steel door swung open with a loud metallic squeak. Agent Miller walked in, carrying a fresh cup of black coffee in a paper cup. She sat down opposite Damian, placing the cup carefully on the table before opening the manila folder with deliberate slowness.

"Did you sleep at all, Mr. Vance?" Agent Miller asked, her tone surprisingly civil, though devoid of warmth.

"I don't need sleep. I need a lawyer," Damian replied, his voice raspy and exhausted. "And I need you to explain what kind of sick game Clara and Julian are playing. You said Clara was cooperating with you. How is that possible when she was supposed to be dead?"

Agent Miller flipped open the first page of the file, sliding a glossy photograph across the metal table toward Damian. It was a picture of a bleak, isolated building surrounded by towering chain-link fences topped with razor wire in the middle of a snowy Vermont forest.

"That is Maple Ridge Sanatorium," Agent Miller said calmly. "It’s a private, unregistered facility funded entirely by offshore shell companies controlled by Julian Thorne. Clara was admitted there under an alias five years ago. Her medical records show she was systematically administered heavy neuroleptics to induce profound memory loss and compliance."

Damian stared at the photograph, his stomach churning violently. "Why? If she discovered the shell companies, why didn't Julian just kill her? Why keep her alive in that hellhole for five years?"

Agent Miller leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table. "Because Clara was the sole beneficiary of her family’s massive trust fund. Under the terms of the trust, if she died without an officially declared successor, the entire multi-million-dollar estate reverted to her legal husband—you, Mr. Vance. But if she remained legally missing, the funds were locked in probate indefinitely. Julian needed you to remarry someone he could control, someone who would sign off on liquidating those trust assets so he and your new wife could siphon the cash offshore."

The brutal reality of the conspiracy hit Damian like a physical blow. His current wife—the woman he had married believing she loved him—was nothing more than a pawn planted by Julian to systematically drain every last cent of Clara’s family inheritance.

"And Clara?" Damian whispered, his voice trembling. "How did she wake up? How did she escape?"

Agent Miller picked up her coffee cup, taking a slow sip before answering. "About six months ago, a sympathetic nurse smuggled a low dose of an antidote into Clara's medication regimen. Her memory started returning in flashes. She realized who she was, what happened to her daughter, and how you had unknowingly signed away your life to a fraud. She contacted us directly from a payphone in a nearby town."

Damian buried his face in his cuffed hands, a wave of profound guilt washing over him. "I didn't know," he choked out, his shoulders shaking. "God help me, Agent Miller, I honestly thought she was dead."

"Ignorance is an expensive luxury, Mr. Vance," Agent Miller said quietly, closing the file with a sharp snap. "And your wife wants her daughter, her home, and her life back. She is pressing full charges against both you and Julian."
