Chapter 10 - The Arraignment

The federal courtroom was cavernous, solemn, and intimidating. Dark mahogany paneling lined the walls, and the high vaulted ceiling cast long shadows over the rows of empty wooden benches. A thick wall of bulletproof glass separated the public gallery from the well of the court, where the judge’s bench towered above everything else like an unyielding monument of justice.

Damian sat at the defense table, flanked by his public defender, Henderson. His wrists were free of handcuffs for the court appearance, but his posture remained slumped and defeated. He wore an ill-fitting orange jumpsuit issued by the federal detention center, a jarring contrast to the bespoke black suits he had worn his entire adult life.

Across the aisle, Julian sat at the prosecution's witness consultation table. Julian looked remarkably composed, wearing a freshly pressed charcoal suit provided by his own high-priced legal team. He wasn't wearing handcuffs either, a quiet perk of his newly minted cooperation agreement with the federal government. Julian caught Damian’s eye across the courtroom and offered a cold, knowing smirk before turning back to confer with his lawyers.

The heavy oak side doors opened, and a murmur rippled through the courtroom gallery. Clara walked in, holding little Maya tightly by the hand. Clara wore a simple black coat, her face pale but composed. She did not look toward the defense table; her gaze remained fixed firmly on the judge's bench ahead. Maya clutched her frayed stuffed rabbit to her chest, her big brown eyes scanning the imposing room with timid curiosity.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Elizabeth Vance," the bailiff announced sharply, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling.

Everyone in the courtroom stood up. Judge Vance, a stern-faced woman with sharp gray hair and piercing eyes, walked briskly to her elevated bench and settled into her high-backed leather chair.

"Be seated," the judge commanded, her voice cutting through the silence like glass.

The courtroom rustled as everyone sat back down. Judge Vance adjusted her reading glasses, looking down over the heavy stack of documents resting on her desk.

"We are here for the arraignment in the matter of United States versus Damian Vance and Julian Thorne," Judge Vance began, her eyes scanning the room before locking onto Damian. "Mr. Vance, you are facing multiple federal indictments, including wire fraud, conspiracy to launder illicit funds, and conspiracy to commit unlawful restraint. How do you plead?"

Damian stood up slowly, his legs feeling heavy beneath the orange jumpsuit. He looked across the room at Clara, hoping against hope that she might meet his gaze, but she continued to stare straight ahead, completely shutting him out.

Damian swallowed hard, his throat tight. "Not guilty, Your Honor."

A collective murmur rippled through the gallery. Judge Vance raised a single hand, instantly silencing the room. "Noted, Mr. Vance. The prosecution has submitted a substantial digital paper trail indicating your direct complicity in these offenses. However, counsel for co-defendant Julian Thorne has indicated a willingness to provide turning testimony under a formal plea agreement."

Julian’s lead attorney stood up smoothly. "Thank you, Your Honor. My client is prepared to testify regarding Mr. Vance's central role in directing the financial concealment and coordinating the operations while maintaining plausible deniability."

Damian’s blood boiled. He took a step forward, about to protest, but Henderson grabbed his arm firmly, pulling him back down into his seat.

"Don't make a scene," Henderson hissed quietly in his ear. "It won't help you here."

Judge Vance looked down at Damian with profound disappointment. "Bail is denied given the severe flight risk and the nature of the charges. Trial date is set for November twelfth. Court is adjourned."

As the judge’s gavel struck wood with a sharp crack, Julian stood up, buttoned his jacket, and walked out of the courtroom with an air of absolute triumph, leaving Damian sitting alone in his orange jumpsuit, staring at the empty doorway through which Clara and Maya had already disappeared.
