Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Lies

Panic erupted in the room as Clara’s limp body hit the floor. The remaining guests abandoned all pretense of polite decorum, rushing past the threshold toward the front doors and escaping into the cool night air. Only the echoes of their retreating footsteps remained, mingling with the heavy, fractured breathing of the people left behind in the candlelit dining room.

Damian scrambled across the floor, his knees scraping against the polished wood as he reached Clara’s side. He gathered her fragile, cold body into his arms, pressing his ear against her chest to listen for a heartbeat. It was faint, thready, but it was there. She was alive.

"Clara? Clara, open your eyes," Damian pleaded, his voice breaking as he brushed the wet, dark hair away from her pale forehead. He looked up frantically at the woman in the blue dress, who was still huddled against the wall in sheer terror. "Call an ambulance! What are you waiting for? Call 911 right now!"

Before his wife could pull her phone from her clutch, a heavy shadow fell over them. Julian stood above them, his hands casually shoved into the pockets of his black trousers, looking down at the scene with detached clinical interest. He didn't offer to help. He didn't look surprised.

"Don't bother with the local authorities, Damian," Julian said smoothly, stepping closer. "An ambulance brings flashing lights, police reports, and inconvenient questions. Questions about where Clara has been hiding for the last five years, and more importantly, who paid to keep her locked away in a private sanatorium upstate."

Damian’s head snapped up, his dark eyes blazing with murderous intent. "You. You did this. You put her there."

Julian shrugged indifferently. "We were partners, Damian. We shared everything—bank accounts, real estate developments, and corporate secrets. When Clara stumbled onto our offshore shell companies, she gave us a choice: turn ourselves in or disappear. I simply made sure she chose the latter."

From the floor, the little girl crawled over, ignoring Julian entirely. She threw her small arms around Clara’s waist, burying her face in the heavy winter coat and sobbing quietly. "Mommy, wake up. The bad men are yelling again."

Damian felt a cold sweat break out across his neck. He looked from the innocent child to the unconscious woman in his arms, and finally to the wife he had married two years ago—the woman sitting against the wall wearing Clara’s stolen ring.

"You knew," Damian said, staring at his current wife with absolute horror. "When I met you, when we got married... you knew Clara was alive, didn't you?"

His wife couldn't meet his gaze. She stared down at her lap, her fingers mindlessly twisting the silver star ring. "Julian introduced us," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "He said you needed someone to help you move on. He said Clara was never coming back."

Julian smiled, crouching down until he was eye level with Damian. He reached out and tapped the silver ring on the unconscious woman's finger. "Family secrets have a funny way of coming home to roost, Damian. But the real question isn't how she escaped. The real question is what she told the federal investigators before she walked through your front door tonight."
