Chapter 11 - The Secret Ledger

The federal detention center was a labyrinth of concrete corridors, reinforced steel doors, and the constant, depressing hum of fluorescent lighting. Damian spent twenty-three hours a day locked inside a six-by-nine-foot concrete cell, the silence broken only by the echoing footsteps of guards making their rounds. His world had shrunk to the dimensions of a metal bunk, a small steel sink, and the harsh gray walls that mirrored his internal desolation.
On the fifth day of his incarceration, a guard unlocked his cell door with a loud metallic clatter. "Vance. Visitor in Booth Three. You have twenty minutes."
Damian blinked against the harsh corridor light, his muscles stiff as he stood up and followed the guard down the sterile hallway. He expected Henderson, his public defender, or perhaps another round of questioning from Agent Miller. Instead, when the heavy glass partition of Booth Three slid open, he saw an unexpected face sitting on the other side.
It wasn't Clara. It was Elena, Clara’s former personal assistant from five years ago—a quiet, hardworking young woman who had mysteriously vanished from the company offices just days before Clara’s disappearance.
Damian sat down on the bolted metal stool, picking up the heavy black telephone receiver. Elena picked up hers on the other side of the glass, her hands trembling slightly as she rested them on the stainless steel counter.
"Elena?" Damian said into the receiver, his voice cracking with shock. "The police searched for you for years. They thought you fled the country with embezzled funds."
Elena looked around nervously before staring directly into Damian’s eyes through the smudged glass. "I didn't flee, Mr. Vance. Julian forced me out. He threatened my family."
Damian gripped the telephone receiver tighter, his knuckles turning white. "What are you talking about? Why are you here now?"
"Because I saw the news about your arraignment," Elena replied, her voice shaking with suppressed emotion. "I watched Julian lie on national television, painting himself as a victim while you take the fall for everything. I couldn't sit by and watch an innocent man take the blame for crimes Julian committed entirely alone."
A surge of desperate hope flared in Damian’s chest. "Innocent? Elena, the feds found an email sent from my laptop authorizing the Vermont facility. My digital signature is on it."
Elena shook her head vigorously, tears welling in her eyes. "It wasn't your laptop, Mr. Vance. Or rather, it was your laptop, but Julian had a hardware keylogger installed in your office keyboard for months. He had administrator access to every device you owned. I saw him sitting at your desk late at night typing code while you were away at dinner meetings."
Damian’s breath caught in his throat. The digital trap wasn't just a clever forgery; it was a premeditated, physical sabotage executed right under his nose while he foolishly trusted his business partner.
"Do you have proof, Elena?" Damian asked, his voice urgent and breathless. "Do you have physical evidence?"
Elena reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, worn leather-bound notebook, pressing it flat against the glass partition for Damian to see. "This is Clara’s personal office ledger from five years ago. Before she disappeared, she discovered Julian was secretly transferring corporate funds to offshore accounts under fake identities. She confronted him in the office parking garage the night she vanished."
Damian stared at the ledger pressed against the glass, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What else did she discover that night?"
Elena swallowed hard, her eyes filled with terror as she whispered the final piece of the puzzle that would change everything.

"Julian didn't just lock Clara away in Vermont," Elena said, her voice trembling over the secure line. "He didn't act alone. He had an accomplice inside your own household—someone very close to you who helped him orchestrate her disappearance from the very beginning."
