Chapter 1 - The Candlelit Collision

The dining room chandelier cast a warm, golden glow over the immaculate table, illuminating the silver silverware and the delicate crystal glasses filled with vintage wine. Soft classical music drifted through the air, barely masking the polite murmurs of wealthy guests enjoying an upscale dinner party. Damian stood at the head of the table, his sharp black suit contrasting sharply with the white linen tablecloth. His wife, elegant in her striking blue off-the-shoulder dress, smiled faintly at a guest across from her. The atmosphere was sophisticated, controlled, and entirely predictable until the heavy mahogany double doors creaked open.
A little girl with wide brown hair, still dressed in her soft pink pajamas and clutching a frayed stuffed rabbit, bolted into the room. Her small bare feet slapped against the polished hardwood floor as she sprinted directly toward the head of the table. She ignored the gasps of the surrounding socialites and pointed a trembling, accusing finger straight at Damian’s hand, resting casually near his water glass.
"That's my mommy's ring!" the little girl cried out excitedly, her voice piercing the quiet hum of the room.
Damian froze, the color instantly draining from his face. His dark eyes flicked down to his own hand, then across to his wife’s trembling fingers. Without a word, he lunged forward, grabbing his wife’s wrist with a tight, bruising grip. The guests gasped, shifting uncomfortably in their seats.
"Show me your hand," Damian commanded, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low register that silenced the entire table.
His wife tried to pull away, her eyes wide with sudden panic. "Damian, you're hurting me. Let go of me right now in front of everyone."
"I said, show me your hand!" Damian repeated, his chest heaving as he forcibly turned her palm upward under the harsh glare of the chandelier.
The silver ring gleamed mockingly under the candlelight. It featured a delicate, hand-carved star motif encrusted with three tiny, flawed diamonds—an unmistakably unique piece of jewelry that belonged to a woman who had supposedly vanished from the face of the earth five years ago.
"Where did you get this?" Damian demanded, his voice cracking with a mix of fury and disbelief. "Where did your mother keep it?"
The little girl stood frozen near his elbow, clutching her stuffed rabbit to her chest. She looked up with big, terrified eyes, her lower lip trembling as she whispered the words that would tear Damian's carefully constructed life apart.
"In the wood box by her bed," the child whispered softly.
Before Damian could process the devastating implications of the child's words, the heavy dining room doors swung open again with a sharp slam. A tall man in an identical black suit strode into the room, his face twisted into a cold, predatory smirk.

"Let her go, Damian," the newcomer drawled, stepping into the light. "You're asking the wrong questions about a dead woman."
