Chapter 13 - The Empty Mansion

The neon lights of the federal SUV cut through the dense midnight fog as it pulled through the wrought-iron gates of Damian’s sprawling suburban estate. The grand white facade of the mansion loomed against the dark night sky like a ghost ship, completely devoid of life or warmth. There were no candles burning in the windows this time, no classical music drifting across the lawn, and no polite guests laughing in the dining room.
Agent Miller stepped out of the vehicle, her heavy boots crunching against the gravel driveway. She motioned to a team of tactical agents carrying flashlights and tactical gear. "Secure the perimeter. Check every room, every closet, and every exit. I want to know where she went."
Damian stood a few paces behind Agent Miller, his hands uncuffed for the brief transport under heavy armed guard. He looked up at the towering mahogany double doors where Clara had emerged just nights ago to reclaim her life. The entire property felt haunted by the echoes of greed, betrayal, and deceit.
The tactical team breached the front doors, sweeping the foyer before moving systematically through the ground floor. Damian followed Agent Miller into the grand dining room—the very place where the candlelit dinner party had violently imploded when little Maya had pointed at the silver star ring.
The dining table was still set with the remnants of the aborted dinner party: dusty crystal glasses, tarnished silver silverware, and half-melted candles stubbed out in pools of hardened wax. It looked like a museum exhibit dedicated to the night a man’s empire collapsed.
"Look at this," one of the tactical agents called out, shining his high-powered flashlight toward the far corner of the room near the mahogany double doors.
Agent Miller and Damian walked over quickly. On the polished hardwood floor lay a small, frayed stuffed rabbit—Maya’s favorite toy—abandoned in the rush of a panicked departure. Beside it sat a handwritten note folded neatly on a silver tray.
Agent Miller picked up the note with a gloved hand, unfolding the crisp stationery carefully. She read the contents silently under the beam of the flashlight, her sharp brow furrowing deeply.
"What does it say?" Damian demanded, his voice tight with rising panic. "Is it from my wife?"
Agent Miller handed the note to Damian. The handwriting was neat, elegant, and chillingly calm.
“You can’t lock the truth away forever, Damian. Julian is singing to save his own skin, but the real mastermind is still holding the final card. If you ever want to see your daughter again, look where it all began.”
Damian’s breath hitched in his throat. He stared at the handwritten words, trying to decipher the cryptic warning. Where it all began.
"What does that mean?" Damian muttered, running a hand through his disheveled hair. "Where did it all begin?"
Agent Miller’s eyes widened as she connected the dots faster than Damian could process the grief. "Your old family estate—the cliffside property where Clara’s car was supposedly recovered five years ago. That’s where Julian set up the entire staging ground. That’s where your wife took Maya."
Without a second thought, Damian turned and sprinted toward the front doors of the mansion, ignoring the shouted warnings of the tactical agents behind him. He threw himself into the back of the federal SUV as Agent Miller slid into the driver's seat, slamming the gearshift into drive.

"Step on it!" Damian yelled, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs as the vehicle tore down the gravel driveway, kicking up a storm of dust in the dark night. "If Julian's plea deal tipped them off, she’s taking Maya to finish what Julian started!"
