Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Foyer

Damian froze, his knuckles locked tightly around Julian’s lapels. The ambient noise of the candlelit dining room seemed to recede into a distant, muffled hum. Every muscle in his body coiled tightly as the weight of Julian's words hung in the suffocating air. Slowly, deliberately, Damian loosened his grip on his former friend's suit jacket. He did not turn around immediately; the sheer terror of what might be waiting behind him paralyzed his limbs.

"Don't play games with me, Julian," Damian whispered, his voice trembling despite his best efforts to sound commanding. "Clara is gone. The police closed the case four years ago. Her car was found at the bottom of the cliff."

Julian straightened his lapels with slow, deliberate movements, smoothing the black fabric without breaking eye contact. A dark, sardonic smile played at the corners of his mouth. "The police find what they are paid to find, Damian. Or rather, what powerful men like us want them to find. Did you ever actually look inside the trunk of that car yourself, or did you just take my word for it?"

Damian’s breath hitched. Five years ago, in the chaotic aftermath of Clara’s disappearance, Julian had taken charge of every detail. He had handled the authorities, the insurance adjusters, and the wreckage recovery while Damian sat paralyzed in grief.

From across the room, Damian’s current wife let out a sharp, hysterical sob. She slid down the wall until she was sitting on the polished floor, her blue off-the-shoulder dress pooling around her like water. "He made me wear it," she gasped, pointing a shaking finger at the silver star ring still glinting on her finger. "Julian said if I didn't wear the ring to this party, he would expose everything we did."

The guests began whispering frantically, scrambling away from the table toward the exit. The illusion of a sophisticated, high-society dinner party had dissolved into a nightmare of betrayal and hidden crimes.

Damian ignored the fleeing guests. He turned his back on Julian and slowly faced the grand arched entryway leading into the darkened foyer. The heavy crystal chandelier in the hallway flickered once, twice, and then went completely dark, plunging the corridor into deep shadow.

Standing right at the threshold of the dining room, bathed in the pale moonlight filtering through the high windows, was a silhouette. It was a woman wearing a heavy winter coat, her wet dark hair clinging to her pale cheeks. She stood completely still, watching them with hollow, haunted eyes.

The little girl dropped her stuffed rabbit, letting out a joyful, piercing cry. "Mommy!"

Damian’s heart stopped. The woman in the doorway stepped forward into the warm candlelight of the dining room. It was Clara. She was bruised, thin, and older, but her face was unmistakably, hauntingly real. She looked directly at Damian, her eyes carrying a mountain of silent suffering.

"Hello, Damian," Clara said, her voice a fragile whisper that cut through the silence like a razor. "Did you miss me?"

May you like

Damian staggered backward, his legs buckling beneath him as he hit the edge of the dining table. Before he could utter a single word, Clara collapsed onto the hardwood floor, unconscious.
