Chapter 12 - The Inside Accomplice

The words hung heavily in the sterile air of the detention center visiting booth. Damian pressed his ear tighter against the telephone receiver, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against his ribs.
"An accomplice?" Damian repeated, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. "Inside my own household? Who are you talking about, Elena?"
Elena looked over her shoulder anxiously, checking to ensure no guards were lingering near the glass partition before leaning closer to the microphone. "I don't know the person's name, Mr. Vance, but I saw the wire transfers in Clara’s ledger. For months before Clara vanished, substantial sums were funneled into a private domestic account held by someone living under your roof—someone who had access to Clara’s bedroom, her personal belongings, and the wood box where she kept her silver star ring."
Damian’s mind raced through the roster of people who had lived in or frequented his sprawling suburban estate five years ago. Housekeepers, administrative staff, security guards—and his current wife, who had mysteriously appeared in his social circle shortly after Clara’s disappearance, conveniently introduced by Julian himself.
"My wife," Damian breathed out, the horrific realization hitting him like a physical blow. "Julian didn't just plant her in my life two years ago. She was already connected to him from the very beginning."
Elena nodded slowly, tears spilling over her lower lashes. "Julian played a very long game, Mr. Vance. He knew that if Clara ever escaped or if the truth came to light, he needed someone inside your home to control the narrative, keep the child quiet, and ensure the ring—the ultimate symbol of Clara's identity—was worn openly to mock you both."
Damian slammed his fist against the stainless steel counter, ignoring the sharp pain in his knuckles. "I need to get this ledger to Agent Miller immediately. If the FBI examines those domestic wire transfers, they'll trace the money straight back to Julian and expose the entire conspiracy."
Elena slid the worn leather notebook down, concealing it inside her coat pocket once more. "I already copied the relevant pages and sent them to Agent Miller's secure federal drop-box an hour before I came here. She has the physical evidence now."
Before Damian could express his overwhelming gratitude, a buzzer sounded harshly overhead, signaling the end of the visiting period. The guard stepped up behind Elena, placing a firm hand on her shoulder and escorting her away from the glass partition.
"Thank you, Elena," Damian called out desperately through the small speaker grille. "Thank you for saving my life."
Elena didn't look back as she was led out of the booth, her hurried footsteps fading down the concrete corridor. Damian sat alone in the dim room, the telephone receiver dangling loosely from its cord, swinging back and forth with a slow, hypnotic rhythm.
Late that evening, back inside his stark concrete cell, the heavy steel door unlocked once more. It wasn't time for recreation, and it wasn't another visitor. Two guards stepped aside as Agent Miller walked into the cell block, stopping outside Damian’s bars with a thick manila folder in her hand.
"You received Elena's ledger pages," Damian stated immediately, standing up from his metal bunk and stepping toward the bars.
Agent Miller opened the folder, pulling out several printed bank statements showing international wire transfers linked to domestic accounts. She looked at Damian with a new expression in her eyes—not pity, but a grudging professional respect.
"We traced the domestic accounts, Mr. Vance," Agent Miller said calmly. "Elena’s ledger was accurate. The money leads directly to a joint bank account held by Julian Thorne and your current wife, registered under a pseudonym five years ago."
Damian gripped the iron bars tightly. "Then arrest her. Bring her in for questioning right now."

Agent Miller closed the folder, a grim shadow crossing her face. "We tried, Mr. Vance. But when our tactical team arrived at your mansion an hour ago to execute the arrest warrant, the house was completely empty, and your wife had vanished without a trace."
