Chapter 6 - Descent into the Foundation

The air in the subterranean corridors of the estate is thick, damp, and smelling faintly of turned earth and ancient dust. Daniel leads the way, holding a heavy brass candlestick aloft to pierce the absolute darkness, casting long, dancing shadows against the rough stone walls. Clara walks closely behind him, her small hand firmly wrapped around the hem of his dark suit jacket, her white shoes clicking softly against the uneven floorboards. Victoria trails behind them, her movements robotic and mechanical, forced along by the unspoken, crushing gravity of what awaits them at the end of the hall.
"It’s this way," Clara whispers, her voice echoing slightly in the narrow stone passage. She stops in front of a heavy, unassuming wooden door tucked away in the darkest corner behind the wine racks—a door that blends so seamlessly into the stone masonry that anyone walking past would assume it was merely a supporting wall.
Daniel steps up to the door. He raises the silver key, his hand steady despite the chaotic storm raging in his mind. The key slides into the heavy iron lock with surprising ease, turning with a deep, echoing click that sounds like the final snap of a trap closing.
"Daniel, please," Victoria whispers from the shadows behind them, her voice cracking for the first time with genuine, unadulterated fear. Her elegant composure is entirely gone, her blonde updo coming undone, stray strands clinging to her damp forehead. "If you open that door, there’s no going back for any of us. Some secrets are better left buried in the dark where they belong."
Daniel pauses, his hand resting on the iron handle. He turns his head slightly, his eyes cold and hollow in the flickering candlelight. "You should have thought about that before you buried my wife, Victoria."

With a firm pull, Daniel swings the heavy door open. A rush of cold, stagnant air billows out from the hidden room, extinguishing the candle in his hand and plunging them into total darkness, save for the faint, eerie glow of a single emergency lantern mounted on the far wall. As their eyes adjust to the dim light, the horrifying contents of the secret chamber are slowly revealed—and resting in the center of the room is a vintage leather trunk marked with Elena’s initials, leaking a thin, dark stream of liquid from beneath its locked lid.
