Chapter 12 - The Shattered Reflection

The revelation hits Daniel like a physical blow, knocking the wind from his chest. Julian Sterling. The man who shared cigars in his study, toasted to his second marriage, and played catch with Clara on the front lawn. The betrayal is so vast, so calculating, that it eclipses even Victoria’s treachery.

"Julian," Daniel whispers, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. He stands up abruptly, the velvet armchair scraping harshly against the hardwood floor. "That’s impossible. Julian was the one who managed the probate accounts. He was the one who assured me Elena’s estate was settled cleanly after the accident."

"A fox doesn't guard the henhouse by accident, Mr. Vance," Agent Miller interjects smoothly, walking over from the window with his hands buried deep in the pockets of his trench coat. "Julian engineered the entire legal loophole that allowed Victoria to step into this house without triggering the clauses in Elena's original will. He didn't just help her take your money—he helped her erase your first wife's legal identity from corporate records entirely."

Clara remains frozen on the sofa, her wide eyes locked onto the massive antique mirror hanging over the marble fireplace across the room. The surface of the glass reflects the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers outside, distorting the room into a surreal, nightmarish landscape.

"Dad," Clara calls out, her voice barely a whisper, yet it carries an urgency that cuts through the conversation of the adults. "Look at the mirror."

Daniel pauses, turning his head slowly toward the antique glass. At first, he sees only the reflection of the police officers packing their equipment and the flashing lights outside. But as he steps closer, a chilling detail catches his eye. The reflection in the mirror isn't matching the room in real-time. In the glass, a tall shadow is standing right behind Clara on the sofa—a man wearing a dark three-piece suit, holding a silver key just like the one found in the floral handbag.

Before Daniel can spin around, a low, smooth voice echoes from the darkened foyer behind them, dripping with mocking amusement.

"Well, it looks like my invitation to the party got lost in the mail," Julian Sterling says smoothly as he steps out from the shadows of the hallway, holding a polished chrome revolver aimed directly at Daniel’s chest.
