Chapter 3 - The Sealed Confession

The silence in the opulent hallway stretches thin, charged with a magnetic tension that makes the very air feel heavy. Daniel’s fingers hover just inches away from the floral handbag, sensing the sudden shift in the atmosphere. He pauses, his brow furrowing as he looks up from Clara to meet Victoria’s wide, panicked gaze. The elegant woman who usually carries herself with absolute poise now looks cornered, her posture rigid, her chest rising and falling beneath the diamond necklace in rapid, shallow breaths.
"What is in this bag, Clara?" Daniel asks softly, keeping his eyes locked on his wife. He doesn't wait for his daughter to answer before gently sliding his fingers past the magnetic clasp of the floral handbag, pulling out the cream-colored envelope.
The paper is thick, heavy, and edged with a subtle silver watermark—stationery that belongs exclusively to a legal firm in downtown Manhattan, one that Daniel hasn't done business with in over five years. Victoria takes a desperate half-step forward, her hand clawing out toward the envelope as if she might snatch it back by sheer force of will.
"Daniel, don't open that," Victoria snaps, her voice losing its melodic composure, cracking with a sharp, desperate edge. "It’s... it’s clearly some cruel prank concocted by Clara’s estranged relatives on her mother’s side. You know how bitter they were after Elena passed. They want nothing more than to tear our family apart."
Daniel ignores her. His thumb slides under the heavy wax seal, breaking it with a soft, ominous crack that echoes hollowly in the grand foyer. Clara watches with wide, unblinking eyes, her small hands still clutching the empty handbag like a lifeline. As Daniel unfolds the stiff parchment, his eyes scan the first few lines of the handwritten text. The color drains rapidly from his face, leaving him looking hollow, ghost-like, and profoundly aged in a matter of seconds. The papers tremble slightly in his large hands.
"Daniel?" Victoria breathes, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "What does it say?"
Daniel does not answer her immediately. He lowers the letter slowly, his gaze shifting to Victoria with a look of absolute, unadulterated betrayal that makes the stepmother stagger backward until her spine hits the base of the grand staircase.

"It’s not from her relatives, Victoria," Daniel says, his voice dangerously calm, devoid of all emotion. "It’s from Elena’s private investigator. And it was mailed exactly three days before you and I were married."
