Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Past Speaks

The chandelier above seems to dim, casting long, twisting shadows across the marble floor as the devastating implication of Daniel’s words settles over the foyer. Victoria clutches her throat, her fingers brushing against the cold diamonds of her necklace as if she is struggling to find oxygen. Her carefully constructed life, built on years of calculated charm and silent maneuvering, is suddenly unraveling at the seams because of a single piece of paper pulled from a little girl's floral handbag.
"An investigator?" Victoria stammers, her voice laced with hysteria that she is desperately trying to suppress. "Daniel, you can’t possibly believe the paranoid ramblings of a dead woman's hired gun. Elena was unstable at the end. Everyone in our social circle knew she was losing her grip on reality before the accident."
"Do not speak her name," Daniel commands, rising slowly to his full height. The sheer fury radiating from him is palpable, driving Victoria back another step. He holds the letter up, the crisp paper catching the light. "This isn't about instability, Victoria. This report details financial transactions, forged medical documents, and a series of alarming discrepancies regarding Elena’s final months in this very house. And at the center of every single document is your name."
Clara watches the exchange with the quiet, intense focus of a child forced to grow up far too soon. She steps closer to her father, her small hand sliding into his large palm, grounding him amidst the tempest. She remembers the night her mother handed her the bag, pressing it against her chest with a desperate urgency, telling her to hide it in her closet and never, under any circumstances, let Victoria see it until the time was right.
"She knew," Clara whispers softly, breaking the heavy silence between the adults. "Mom knew you were going to marry her, Dad. She said Victoria wasn't who she pretended to be. She said Victoria poisoned her tea."
The word hangs in the air, sharp and deadly. Victoria lets out a gasp that sounds more like a wounded animal than a human being. Her face contorts in rage, stripping away the elegant facade to reveal the desperate, calculating woman beneath.

"That is a vicious lie!" Victoria shrieks, lunging forward with her fingernails bared, aiming straight for the little girl who holds the key to her destruction. But Daniel is faster. With a roar of pure fury, he catches Victoria by the wrist, swinging her around and slamming her palm against the mahogany wall of the hallway. The floral handbag falls from Clara’s limp grip, spilling its remaining contents across the marble floor—not just the envelope, but a small, heavy silver key bearing an engraved crest that neither of them has ever seen before.
