Chapter 2 - The Shadow on the Grand Staircase

The heavy mahogany doors of the foyer absorb the shock of the confrontation, but the vibrations linger in the very marrow of the house. Daniel stands tall, his broad shoulders blocking Victoria from lunging at Clara again, his dark three-piece suit radiating an aura of cold, calculating authority that has made him a titan in the corporate world. Yet, beneath that formidable exterior, his eyes betray a deep, fracturing vulnerability as he looks down at his daughter.
"Step away from my daughter, Victoria," Daniel repeats, his voice dropping an octave into a low, menacing register that leaves no room for argument.
Victoria forces a brittle, unconvincing laugh, smoothing the front of her pristine white satin gown with trembling fingers. She tries to mask her panic with a veneer of wounded innocence, casting a sidelong glance at Daniel to gauge how much he heard of her vicious threat just moments ago.
"Daniel, darling, you’re overreacting," Victoria purrs, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness that fails to reach her cold, darting eyes. "The child came running in here in a complete frenzy, screaming bloody murder, and tracking mud all over your precious imported marble. I was simply trying to calm her down before she ruined our dinner party."
Clara clutches her father’s dark suit jacket, burying her tear-streaked face against the fine wool, breathing in the familiar scent of cedar and old paper. She holds up the floral handbag once more, letting the corner of the mysterious envelope peek out from the satin lining.
"She lied, Dad," Clara whispers, her voice muffled against his chest. "She said I didn't belong here. She said you would throw me away just like you threw away..."
Clara trails off, choking back a sob. Daniel stiffens. The mention of the past—of the tragic void left behind by Clara’s late mother, Elena—hits him like a physical blow. He kneels down on the cold floor, ignoring the pristine crease of his trousers, and gently takes his daughter’s small chin in his hand.

"Nothing in this world could ever make me throw you away, sweetheart," Daniel murmurs, his gaze softening completely as he looks into Clara’s wide, terrified eyes. He reaches out to take the floral handbag, his fingers brushing against the fabric. But as his hand nears the clasp, Victoria takes a sharp, involuntary step forward, her breath catching in her throat as she stares intently at the envelope inside.
