Chapter 11 - The Confession Room

The opulent living room of the mansion is starkly illuminated by the harsh overhead lights, stripping away the warm, inviting ambiance it usually wore for dinner parties and social gatherings. Two police cruisers are parked directly outside the floor-to-ceiling bay windows, their crimson and azure lights painting rhythmic, pulsing patterns across the imported Persian rugs and the grand piano in the corner.

Daniel sits heavily on the edge of a velvet armchair, his dark suit jacket unbuttoned, his tie slightly loosened around his neck. He looks exhausted, the events of the evening carving deep lines of age and profound sorrow into his face. Across the room, Agent Miller stands by the window, quietly conferring with the lead detective while a team of forensic technicians meticulously bag the evidence recovered from the subterranean vault.

Clara sits curled up in the corner of the plush sofa, still wearing her pink ruffled dress, though the hem is stained with the dust and dampness of the hidden room. She holds her empty floral handbag tightly against her chest like a shield, her eyes tracking every movement of the police officers as they catalog the room.

The front door opens with a heavy creak, and an officer steps into the formal sitting area, holding a clipboard and a secure digital tablet. He walks directly over to Daniel, offering a solemn nod of professional courtesy.

"Mr. Vance, we’ve secured the preliminary statements from Mrs. Vance down at the precinct," the officer says quietly, leaning down so only Daniel can hear. "She’s singing, but not the way you’d expect. She claims she didn't act alone. She insists there was someone else inside your corporate inner circle who helped her orchestrate the entire hostile takeover of Elena’s estate from the very beginning."

Daniel slowly raises his head, his brow furrowing deeply. A cold knot tightens in his stomach. "Who? Who else could possibly have had access to Elena's private financial records?"

The officer hesitates, glancing briefly at the digital tablet before looking back into Daniel’s eyes. "According to her signed deposition, the mastermind inside your company wasn't an outsider. It was your closest business partner, and the executor of Elena’s original will—Julian Sterling."

The name hangs in the air like a physical blow. Julian is not just Daniel's partner; he is his oldest friend, the man who stood beside him at his first wedding, the man who comforted him when Elena died, and the godfather to Clara. As the devastating reality sets in, Clara suddenly sits straight up on the sofa, her eyes widening in sheer terror as she points a trembling finger toward the hallway mirror.
