Chapter 13 - The Friend at the Door

The sudden, chilling sound of a hammer cocking back on a firearm freezes everyone in the room. The police officers whirl around, their hands instantly dropping to their holsters, but they are too far away, and Julian stands dangerously close to Clara on the sofa, using the little girl as a human shield with cold, calculated precision.
"Don't even think about it, boys," Julian purrs, his voice entirely devoid of panic. He looks remarkably composed for a man cornered by law enforcement, dressed in an impeccably tailored grey suit that matches the cool, calculating expression in his eyes. He takes another step forward, his arm wrapped loosely around Clara’s small shoulders, the barrel of the revolver resting just inches from her temple.
Daniel’s heart hammers against his ribs with terrifying force. Every drop of blood rushes away from his face, leaving him looking ghost-white as he stares at his oldest, most trusted friend holding a gun to his daughter's head.
"Julian... what are you doing?" Daniel asks, his voice trembling with a mixture of raw fury and absolute disbelief. "Put the gun down. It’s over. Victoria has already confessed to everything."
Julian lets out a low, dry chuckle, shaking his head slowly. "Victoria was always a liability, Daniel. Too emotional, too dramatic, too sloppy with her execution. I built this entire corporate empire alongside you from the ground up, and you honestly believed I was going to let some dead woman's secret letters destroy everything we worked for? Elena knew too much about our off-shore restructuring accounts. She had to be dealt with. And Victoria was simply the convenient instrument to make it happen."
Clara doesn't cry. She doesn't scream. Remembering every lesson her mother taught her about bravery, she slowly reaches down beside the cushion of the sofa, her fingers brushing against the empty floral handbag. She slips her hand inside the secret inner pocket, her small fingers wrapping securely around the heavy silver key she dropped earlier.
"You're a monster, Julian," Clara says, her voice ringing clear and steady in the tense room, completely devoid of fear.
Julian glances down at the little girl with a cold, condescending smirk. "Smart girl, just like your mother. But unfortunately, knowing too much runs in the family."

As Julian shifts his weight slightly to angle the gun toward Daniel, Clara suddenly thrusts her hand out of the floral handbag, driving the heavy, jagged silver key straight into the back of Julian's hand with all her might.
