Chapter 10 - Sirens in the Night

The wailing of the police sirens grows progressively louder, cutting through the heavy night air and piercing the thick stone walls of the subterranean vault like a series of sharp, jagged blades. The red and blue flashing lights streak through the high basement windows of the mansion, casting erratic, dramatic shadows across the damp concrete floor and illuminating the faces of everyone present in harsh, contrasting colors.
Victoria flinches as the light sweeps over her, the panic finally breaking through her defiant sneer. She takes a frantic step toward the dark corridor leading to the service stairs, desperate to find an exit, but Agent Miller steps into her path, blocking the narrow exit with unyielding authority.
"Don't even think about it, Victoria," Miller warns, his hand resting firmly on the butt of a concealed holster beneath his coat. "The perimeter is locked down. Every exit from this estate is currently being monitored by federal and local law enforcement. Your game of chess is officially over."
Daniel stands like a statue carved from ice, watching his wife with a look of absolute detachment. The realization of how deeply he was manipulated—how close he came to losing not just his fortune, but his own daughter—sends a cold fury coursing through his veins. He looks down at the flash drive in his hand, then at the open leather trunk filled with Elena’s preserved belongings, realizing that the ghost of his late wife has finally reclaimed her home.
"You thought you could erase her," Daniel says, his voice carrying a chilling resonance that makes Victoria freeze in her tracks. "You thought by hiding her trunk, burning her letters, and threatening our child, you could wipe her existence from this house. But you forgot one simple truth, Victoria: evil built on lies always collapses under the weight of its own foundation."
Victoria trembles violently, her white satin gown now stained with dust and damp grime from the floor. She opens her mouth to speak, to lash out with another insult or desperate plea, but the sound is choked off by the heavy thud of heavy boots descending the cellar stairs. Within seconds, two uniformed officers emerge into the dim light of the vault, their badges gleaming under the emergency lantern.
"Mr. Vance?" the lead officer asks, his eyes darting between Daniel, the investigator, and the slumped figure of Victoria. "We received an anonymous tip regarding federal fraud and unlawful confinement at this address."
Daniel holds up the manila envelope and the flash drive, his expression stern and resolute. "You're right on time, Officer. I want this woman placed under immediate arrest for financial fraud, conspiracy, and the wrongful death of my first wife."
