Chapter 8: The Departure at Dawn

The south gate of the estate stood open, the cool morning mist curling around the tires of a sleek black sedan idling quietly on the gravel drive. Julian stood near the portico, his hands tucked into the pockets of his black wool overcoat, watching as Elena walked down the grand steps. She carried a single canvas duffel bag, her light blue maid uniform replaced by a simple beige trench coat and dark jeans. Her brother Lucas stood beside her, his arm protectively around her shoulders, casting nervous glances back at the towering mansion behind them.

"Everything is arranged," Julian said quietly as they approached. "The apartment north of the city is fully paid for. You’ll have security, financial stability, and most importantly, your peace of mind. No one will bother you again."

Elena stopped a few feet away, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. The transformation from the terrified girl cowering on the marble floor to this poised, free young woman was striking. She looked up at Julian, the man who had risked his own marriage and stability to pull her from the edge of an abyss.

"I don't know how to thank you, Mr. Vance," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly. "You saved us. Both of us."

"Just live your lives, Elena," Julian replied, offering a rare, gentle smile that softened the harsh lines of his face and the dark ink on his neck. "And don't look back."

Lucas stepped forward, extending a hand. Julian shook it firmly, feeling the younger man’s grip tighten with profound gratitude. Without another word, brother and sister climbed into the back of the sedan. The doors clicked shut with a muffled thud, and the vehicle glided silently down the driveway, swallowed quickly by the morning fog.

Julian watched until the taillights vanished from sight. A cold breeze swept across the courtyard, carrying the scent of damp earth and coming rain. He turned slowly, walking back up the grand stone steps toward the heavy oak doors of the house. He knew what awaited him inside. Clara had watched the departure from the second-floor balcony, her emerald robe billowing slightly in the wind like the wings of a trapped predator.

When Julian stepped into the foyer, Clara was already waiting at the top of the grand staircase. Her arms were crossed, her posture rigid, her eyes burning with an incandescent rage that no longer needed words to express.
