Chapter 1: The Shattered Mirror

The air in the grand hallway tasted of cold marble and expensive perfume. Clara stood over the broken glass, her breathing shallow, her vibrant red silk slip dress catching the harsh afternoon light spilling through the tall arched windows. Her blonde updo was slightly undone, a single stray lock framing a face twisted in raw, unfiltered fury. Beneath her, curled against the pristine white wall, young Elena clutched her stomach, tears streaking her flushed face. Elena wore a light blue maid uniform with a crisp white apron, her dark hair tied back in a neat bun that had begun to unravel.

Clara’s voice cut through the silence like a jagged blade. "Get out of my sight!" The words echoed against the high ceilings, bouncing off the massive crystal chandeliers that hung like frozen waterfalls above them.

Julian hurried down the hall, his long strides eating up the distance. At thirty-five, Julian possessed a striking presence, his tall frame clad in a sharply tailored black suit jacket over a white open-collar shirt. Intricate black ink tattoos peeked out from beneath his collar, curling up the side of his neck like dark vines, a stark contrast to the opulent estate they inhabited. He reached them just as Clara stepped closer, her hand raised as if to strike the weeping girl again.

Julian’s hand shot out, his fingers wrapping firmly around Clara’s bare arm. He pulled her back with controlled force.

Elena curled tighter, burying her face in her knees, her voice a fragile whisper. "Please... leave me alone."

Julian looked intently down at Clara, his expression a mask of stern disapproval. He gripped her shoulder, turning her slightly away from the terrified girl on the floor. His voice was low, steady, and terrifyingly calm. "Don't touch her again."

Clara stared at him, her chest heaving, her eyes wide with a dangerous mix of shock and betrayal. "You're protecting her?" she spat out, the disbelief clear in her trembling tone.

Without a word of further argument, Julian released her shoulder. He dropped to one knee beside Elena, his massive frame folding gracefully against the marble floor. He placed a heavy, comforting hand on the girl's trembling shoulder, offering a silent anchor in the storm of Clara’s wrath.

Looking up from the floor, Julian met Clara’s furious gaze with absolute serenity. Deep emotional tension filled the hallway, heavy enough to suffocate. Julian spoke slowly, his eyes locking onto hers. "Leave before I make you."
