Chapter 10: The Boardroom Reckoning

The executive boardroom of Vance-Holt Enterprises was a temple of minimalist modernism, featuring a massive oval table made of smoked glass, surrounded by ergonomic leather chairs and framed by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bustling downtown skyline. The morning sun glared off the glass skyscrapers, casting sharp geometric patterns across the polished concrete floor.
Julian sat at the head of the table, his black suit jacket buttoned, his posture erect. Around him sat five senior members of the board of directors, their expressions grave as they reviewed the thick dossiers spread before them. Among them was Marcus Vance, Julian’s uncle and the longest-serving member of the executive committee.
Marcus adjusted his reading glasses, sliding a financial summary across the glass table toward Julian. "These numbers are devastating, Julian. If this audit is accurate—and Pendelton’s track record suggests it is—Clara hasn't just mismanaged her family trusts. She has systematically looted corporate subsidiary accounts to the tune of four million dollars over the past three years."
"The audit is accurate," Julian confirmed, his voice steady and clinical. "I’ve personally verified the bank transfer receipts and the forged authorization signatures."
Another board member, a sharp-eyed woman named Evelyn, leaned forward, resting her elbows on the glass. "And your involvement, Julian? As her husband and co-signatory on several holding portfolios, the SEC could interpret this as corporate negligence if we don't act decisively."
"Which is why I called this emergency session," Julian said, meeting Evelyn’s gaze without flinching. "I am formally moving to freeze all joint assets tied to Clara’s personal holdings, initiate a full forensic recovery process, and hand these findings over to federal prosecutors by the end of the day. Furthermore, I am stepping down as chief managing director of the domestic division to ensure complete transparency during the investigation."
Murmurs rippled through the boardroom. Marcus exchanged a troubled look with Evelyn before looking back at his nephew. "You realize what this means, Julian? This will trigger a public scandal. The media will tear our family apart."

"Let them," Julian said quietly. "Secrets rot from the inside out, Uncle Marcus. The longer we hide the decay, the more people get hurt. We saw firsthand what collateral damage her actions caused downstairs. I won't be a party to it any longer."
The room fell silent as the board members weighed the heavy consequences of the decision. One by one, they nodded in solemn agreement. The reckoning had begun, and there was no turning back.
