Chapter 2: Echoes in the Marble Hall

The silence that followed Julian’s ultimatum hung heavily in the grand hallway. Clara stood frozen, her high heels planted firmly on the cold marble, her diamond earrings catching the flickering light of the chandeliers overhead. The sheer audacity of Julian defending a domestic worker in her own home—or rather, the home they shared by virtue of a fragile, complicated arrangement—threatened to unhinge her completely. She opened her mouth to unleash another wave of venom, but the cold, unwavering resolve in Julian’s dark eyes stopped her short. There was no hesitation in his posture as he knelt beside Elena, his hand resting steadily on the young maid's blue-clad shoulder.
Elena’s breathing began to slow, though small shudders still wracked her slight frame. She kept her face hidden, her fingers clutching the fabric of her white apron where it covered her abdomen. Julian cast a quick, assessing glance over her, noting the pale tint of her skin and the way she flinched slightly whenever the distant sound of a door closing echoed through the west wing.
"Can you stand?" Julian’s voice was remarkably gentle, a stark contrast to the harsh commands he had issued moments earlier.
Elena gave a microscopic nod, biting her lower lip. Julian slid his arm beneath hers, providing the necessary leverage to lift her carefully off the floor, avoiding the dangerous constellation of broken mirror shards scattered nearby. The ornate antique mirror—a priceless heirloom from Clara’s family estate—now lay in a thousand jagged pieces, reflecting distorted fragments of the grand ceiling and the cold faces looking down upon it.
Clara watched the interaction with narrowed eyes, her arms crossed tightly over the vibrant red silk of her dress. The fabric shifted with her rapid breathing, highlighting the tension in her frame. "This isn't over, Julian," she said, her voice dropping to a low, venomous hiss. "You have no idea what she’s been doing behind closed doors. You think you’re playing the hero, but you’re just inviting a viper into our home."
Julian didn't turn around. He supported Elena as she found her footing, keeping his body positioned between the girl and Clara as a protective barrier. He guided Elena slowly toward the servants’ staircase at the far end of the hallway, ignoring Clara entirely.

"I said, leave," Julian repeated quietly over his shoulder, his tone leaving no room for negotiation.
Realizing that staying would only diminish her fading leverage, Clara spun on her heel. Her silk dress swished angrily against her ankles as she marched away, her sharp heels clicking a furious rhythm against the marble until the heavy oak doors of the master suite slammed shut in the distance.
