Chapter 6: Learning to Live**

Within forty-eight hours, the Vance board officially announced Julian’s termination. His luxury credit cards were declined, his company vehicles were reclaimed, and his corporate accounts were frozen under pending litigation.

Yet, as Julian stood on the sunlit beach behind the cottage, watching four-year-old Mia chase seagulls while Liam built a sandcastle, he had never felt lighter.

"Daddy, look! A starfish!" Mia squeaked, running up to him on tiny feet, holding up a wet, sandy shell.

The word *Daddy* hit Julian like a lightning strike. He froze, his eyes wide, before scooping her up into the air. Mia giggled loudly, her laughter mingling with the rhythm of the waves.

"It's beautiful, Mia," Julian said, hugging her tight against his chest. "Just like you."

Liam walked over, wiping sand from his hands onto his shorts. A tentative, shy smile finally cracked his usually serious face. "Mom used to say you were a fast runner. Can you race me to the big rock?"

"You're on," Julian grinned, setting Mia down safely on a beach blanket.

They sprinted across the packed wet sand. Julian purposely held back just enough to let Liam win by a half-step. The boy threw his hands up in pure triumph, laughing with an uninhibited joy that washed away months of hospital visits and mourning.

That evening, Julian opened a weathered wooden chest in the cottage's study. Inside were blueprints, business licenses, and patent certificates for an independent green shipping venture he had designed five years ago during his spare time.
