The heavy oak doors of the cathedral slammed shut behind them, cutting off the uproar of the wedding guests. Flashbulbs from paparazzi parked outside ignited the afternoon shadows, but Julian shielded both children with his tuxedo jacket, ushering them swiftly into his private sedan.

"Driver, lock the doors. Take us to the coastal cottage in Oakridge," Julian instructed firmly.

The town car sped away from the downtown skyscrapers, leaving behind the Vance family empire and the scandal of the decade. Inside the vehicle, the silence was fragile. Mia was fast asleep against Julian’s shoulder, utterly exhausted. Liam sat stiffly on the leather seat, staring at his worn sneakers, his guard still completely up.

"You must be hungry," Julian said softly, breaking the silence.

Liam didn't answer immediately. He swallowed hard before looking up. "Mom made me practice the speech for three months. She told me to wait until you were in front of everyone so nobody could hide us away."

A sharp pain lanced through Julian’s heart. Elena had known how ruthless the Vance family was. Even on her deathbed, she had strategized the only way to protect her children was in the blinding light of public scrutiny.

"She was so brave, Liam," Julian whispered, his eyes stinging. "You were both so brave."

"Are you going to send us to an orphanage?" Liam asked, his voice barely audible over the hum of the car engine. "The landlord told us that after Mom's funeral, we had nowhere else to go."

"Never," Julian promised, placing a firm, warm hand on the boy's shoulder. "I swear on my life, Liam. As long as I draw breath, no one will ever separate you two again."

Two hours later, the sedan pulled up to a secluded wooden craftsman house overlooking the crashing waves of the Pacific. It was the only property registered solely under Julian’s private name—bought years ago with money he had earned himself, far away from the corporate clutches of Vance Enterprises.
