Chapter 1: The Broken Altar**

The hush inside the grand cathedral was suffocating. Millions of dollars worth of white orchids and crystal chandeliers seemed to turn instantly brittle under the tension. Julian Vance, heir to the Vance shipping empire, stood motionless at the marble altar. His immaculate black tuxedo felt suddenly constricting, suffocating the breath right out of his lungs.
Across from him stood Vanessa Sterling, diamonds dripping from her ears, her sculpted face twisted into a mask of pure indignation.
"Get security!" Vanessa commanded, her sharp voice echoing against the vaulted ceiling. "Throw them out! Who authorized street urchins into my wedding?!"
Julian did not hear her. His eyes were locked on the boy standing ten paces away on the white silk runner. Seven-year-old Liam held his four-year-old sister Mia tightly on his back. The boy’s knuckles were white, his faded button-down shirt dusted with dirt, his knees shaking from the weight of both his sister and his terrifying mission.
"Please don't kick us out..." Liam whispered, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "We promised Mom we'd only give this to you."
Julian took a step forward, ignoring the gasps rippling through five hundred high-society guests. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. He knelt on the cold stone, meeting the boy’s terrified hazel eyes.
"What is that?" Julian asked gently.
Liam reached trembling fingers into his chest pocket and pulled out a worn, yellowed envelope sealed with a familiar wax crest—a crest Julian hadn't seen in eight long years.
"She said you’d know who we are," Liam murmured.
With shaking fingers, Julian broke the wax and unfolded the fragile parchment. The delicate, elegant cursive instantly seized his chest:
> *Julian, if you are reading this, I am already gone. The cancer took whatever time we had left. I never told you because your family threatened to destroy everything you worked for. But Liam and Mia are yours. I raised them to know their father was a good man. Please... don't let them grow up alone.*
> *Yours always, Elena.*
May you like
A tear dropped onto the faded paper, smearing Elena’s name. Julian stared at the two children, noticing for the very first time Liam’s sharp jawline and Mia’s unmistakable amber eyes—identical to his own.
