Chapter 9 - The Betrayal Within the Badge

The heavy rain pounded against the asphalt as Captain Thomas stepped out of the black SUV, his gray uniform jacket soaked through, holding an umbrella in one hand and a service weapon pointed firmly at the ground in the other. He didn't look like a corrupt syndicate boss; he looked like a tired veteran police officer caught in a war he never wanted to fight.

Daniel lowered his pistol slightly from the captive operative, his mind struggling to process the visual data before him. "Thomas? What the hell are you doing here?"

Thomas stopped ten feet away, letting out a heavy, defeated sigh as he flicked the umbrella closed. Water dripped from the brim of his cap, tracing deep lines down his weathered face. "I told you to trust the system, Daniel. I told you Vance was dangerous."

"You didn't tell me he was working with you!" Daniel shouted, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical wound. "The Syndicate, the banking commission—you're running the whole damn operation out of the precinct house!"

Thomas didn't deny it. He simply nodded toward the two operatives, who immediately holstered their weapons and stepped back, blending into the shadows of the loading dock.

"It's not about greed, Daniel. It never was," Thomas said softly, taking a slow step forward. "This city was bankrupt ten years ago. The pension fund was hollowed out by the city council. The only way to keep the infrastructure afloat, to keep schools open and hospitals funded, was to tap into private capital managed by the Vance group. We became caretakers of a corrupt machine because the alternative was total municipal collapse."

"By framing innocent people? By laundering money and threatening children?" Daniel snarled, his grip tightening on his Glock. "You kidnapped my daughter's future to balance a ledger?"

"We didn't kidnap anyone," Thomas replied, his voice rising with defensive urgency. "Elena chose to work with us when her graphic design business went under and she accumulated half a million in gambling debts. She traded her signature to save her family from ruin. But she tried to back out, and Vance doesn't let people walk away."

"She’s currently heading toward the precinct annex with Sophie," Daniel lied smoothly, keeping his posture rigid. "If anything happens to them, the federal grand jury gets the hard drive I hid in my locker—complete with your name at the top of the ledger."

Thomas’s expression hardened instantly, the paternal warmth vanishing from his eyes, replaced by cold, calculating pragmatism. "You didn't hide a hard drive in your locker, Daniel. Because if you did, you would have used it by now."
