Chapter 4 - The Midnight Visitor

The grandfather clock in Martha’s living room chimed midnight, its deep, resonant tones vibrating through the floorboards. Sophie was fast asleep on the floral-patterned sofa, clutching a stuffed rabbit to her chest, her breathing finally calm and even. Daniel sat in a wingback chair by the window, keeping watch with his service weapon resting on the side table beside an unlit cup of black coffee.
The manila envelope and the federal investigation file lay open on his lap. The pieces were falling into a horrifying mosaic. Elena wasn't just trying to win a bitter custody battle; she was using Sophie as leverage, a human shield to ensure Daniel never dug deep enough into her financial dealings to discover the syndicate behind her. If Daniel pushed for full custody, the syndicate exposed her. If he backed down, she would slowly erase him from Sophie’s life entirely.
A sharp, metallic click at the front door broke the silence.
Daniel froze, his hand instantly closing around the grip of his pistol. It wasn't the sound of a key turning; it was the distinct, quiet snap of a lock-pick tension wrench slipping against brass pins. Martha’s front door had deadbolts that required a key from the inside, but the latch had just been slipped from without.
Moving with silent, tactical precision, Daniel rose from the chair, pressed his back against the hallway wall, and waited. The shadow beneath the front entryway stretched as the door drifted open an inch, then two. A figure slipped into the dimly lit foyer, moving with the practiced stealth of someone who knew the exact layout of the house.
Daniel lunged out of the shadows, slamming the intruder against the hallway wall and pinning an arm behind their back while driving his forearm across their shoulder blades.
"Don't move or you're dead!" Daniel hissed, pressing the barrel of his pistol against the base of the intruder's neck.
A soft, breathless gasp echoed in the tight space. "Daniel, wait! For God's sake, don't shoot!"
May you like
Daniel blinked, loosening his grip just enough for the figure to turn their head in the dim amber light spilling from the living room. It wasn't an assassin or a syndicate enforcer. It was Elena, disheveled, her red silk blouse torn at the shoulder, and terror—real, unadulterated terror—shining in her wide eyes.
