Chapter 15 - Justice in the Sunlight

The autumn wind whipped across the grand stone steps of the federal courthouse, carrying the crisp scent of morning rain and the distant hum of city traffic. Daniel stood tall, holding Sophie’s small hand in his right while Elena clutched the green corporate ledger binders against her chest.

At the base of the plaza, federal marshals were leading Marcus Vance out of the courthouse sub-basement exit in heavy steel handcuffs, his immaculate charcoal suit stained with dust and soot, his arrogant demeanor completely shattered. Behind him, two tactical officers escorted the private contractors into separate transport vans.

Captain Thomas walked slowly up the stone steps toward Daniel, stopping three paces away. He didn't offer a salute, nor did he attempt to justify his actions. He simply reached out and placed his service badge and holster onto a nearby stone pillar.

"The grand jury has the server backups and the physical ledgers, Daniel," Thomas said quietly, his voice heavy with resignation. "The warrants for Vance, the syndicate board members, and my own arrest warrant were signed ten minutes ago. The machine is broken, but at least it's finally being dismantled."

Daniel looked at the retired captain, feeling no triumph—only an overwhelming, profound sense of exhaustion and release. "You chose the wrong side, Thomas. But at the end, you made the right call."

Thomas nodded slowly, offering a faint, sad smile before turning to allow the federal agents to escort him away.

Sophie looked up at her father, her blue eyes bright and clear, free of the terror that had gripped them just twenty-four hours earlier. She reached up and touched the edge of Daniel’s tactical vest. "Daddy, can we go home now?"

Daniel knelt down, wrapping his arms around both Sophie and Elena, pulling them close in a tight, unbroken embrace. The red silk blouse Elena wore was torn at the shoulder, and Sophie’s light blue dress was stained with dust, but as they stood together in the warm, golden morning sunlight, the broken pieces of their family finally began to fuse back together into something whole, unbreakable, and true.

"Yes, sweetheart," Daniel whispered, kissing the top of Sophie's blonde head as the distant sirens faded into a peaceful, quiet morning. "We're finally going home."
