Chapter 10 - The Vault at Fourth Street

The rain continued to hammer down in sheets, turning the open loading dock into a wind-swept cage. Daniel stared at Captain Thomas, realizing the terrifying margin of error he was operating under. He had bluffed, and Thomas had called it instantly. There was no hard drive in his locker; the only evidence existed in the manila envelope currently tucked inside his tactical vest.

Before Thomas could signal the operatives to move in, a sharp, rhythmic tapping echoed from the metal siding behind Daniel—three short taps, followed by two long ones. The old Morse code signal for "clear."

Without hesitation, Daniel hurled his heavy tactical flashlight directly into Thomas’s face, blinding him momentarily, and vaulted backward off the loading dock into a narrow drainage ditch below.

Gunshots cracked through the rain-slicked air, wood splinters flying as rounds chewed into the corrugated siding where Daniel had stood a fraction of a second earlier. Scrambling through the muddy ditch, Daniel crawled toward a storm drain grate that had been pried open from the inside. A small hand reached out from the darkness, grabbing his tactical sleeve.

"Daddy, hurry!" Sophie’s voice whispered urgently from the culvert.

Daniel pulled himself through the narrow concrete pipe, sliding down into the ankle-deep rushing water of the underground drainage system. Elena was waiting a few yards down the tunnel, holding a heavy industrial flashlight that cast long, eerie shadows against the damp brick walls.

"Is Thomas..." Elena started, her voice shaking as she tried to catch her breath.

"He’s compromised. The whole command staff is tied into the syndicate," Daniel interrupted, pulling himself to his feet and slamming the heavy iron access grate shut behind them, throwing the latch. "We have to get to the federal courthouse on Fifth Street before the morning shift starts at eight o'clock. That’s our only play."

"The federal building?" Elena stared at him in disbelief. "Daniel, Vance's people control the local cops, but federal marshals don't play games. If we walk in there without an appointment, they'll arrest us both for trespassing or worse."

"We aren't walking in blind," Daniel said, reaching into his vest and pulling out the manila envelope. "The documents inside contain the private encryption keys to the Syndicate’s offshore accounts. When the grand jury opens at eight, this envelope is going straight onto the federal prosecutor's desk."

Sophie clutched her stuffed rabbit tight, looking up at her father with eyes too wise for a five-year-old. "Daddy, the bad man in the car outside Martha's house... he dropped a shiny silver key when he ran away."

Daniel stopped walking, kneeling down in the water to look at his daughter. "What did you say, Soph?"

Sophie reached into the pocket of her light blue dress and pulled out a heavy, master-cut security key stamped with the emblem of the county courthouse basement archives.
