Chapter 12 - Shadows in the Archive Vault

The heavy iron door of the sub-basement archive vault loomed ahead at the end of a long, windowless corridor lined with rows of towering steel shelving units filled with yellowed manila folders and cardboard archive boxes. The air smelled of old paper, dust, and damp concrete.
Daniel approached the massive vault door, pulling the silver key from his pocket. The lock mechanism was an old-school brass mortise cylinder, heavily oxidized around the edges. He inserted the key and turned it clockwise. With a heavy, satisfying mechanical clack, the internal tumblers shifted into alignment.
"Hold the flashlight steady, Elena," Daniel murmured, reaching for the steel wheel handle.
He spun the wheel three full rotations to the left, then two to the right. With a low, pneumatic hiss, the heavy steel seal broke, and the vault door swung open outward, revealing rows of secure filing cabinets glowing under emergency red backup lights.
"We need the corporate ledger files for 'Apex Holdings' and 'Meridian Trust'," Daniel instructed, stepping inside the vault. "Look for the green binders marked nineteen-ninety-eight through present."
Elena rushed to the nearest shelving unit, her fingers flying across the metal tabs. "I found Apex! Row four, section B!"
As she pulled the thick green binder from the shelf, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the main entrance corridor behind them.
Daniel froze, instantly pivoting toward the open vault door. A beam of white tactical light cut through the gloom of the archive room, sweeping across the concrete floor and stopping dead on Elena’s shoes.
"Well, well, well," a smooth, cultured voice drifted down the corridor. "Family reunion in the basement. How touching."
Marcus Vance stepped into the light, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-gray three-piece suit, his silver-rimmed glasses catching the harsh glare of the flashlight. Behind him stood two armed private contractors, their rifles raised and leveled directly at the center of the vault opening.
Daniel stepped in front of Elena and Sophie, raising his Glock with both hands, his muscles coiled like a spring. "Drop your weapons, Vance. You're completely surrounded. Federal marshals are due upstairs in ninety minutes."
May you like
Vance smiled calmly, stepping closer without a shred of fear in his eyes. "Daniel, my dear boy, the only people upstairs right now are sleeping janitors and judges who take my phone calls before breakfast. You brought me the exact evidence I needed to consolidate the entire portfolio. Thank you for making my job so delightfully easy."
