Chapter 13 - The Standoff in the Vault

The amber emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows against the towering stacks of archive boxes. Daniel kept his service weapon locked onto the center mass of Marcus Vance’s chest, his breathing slow and controlled.
"You're not walking out of here with those ledgers, Vance," Daniel said, his voice cold and steady. "The grand jury gets everything, whether it's at eight o'clock or noon."
Vance chuckled softly, adjusting his silk tie with effortless arrogance. "Grand juries are political theater, Daniel. Captain Thomas has already filed a restraining order and an emergency mental health evaluation warrant against you. By eight-thirty, you'll be locked inside a psychiatric observation ward, Elena will be facing extradition to a federal holding facility in Virginia, and sweet little Sophie will become a ward of the state under my corporate guardianship."
Sophie whimpered softly, burying her face against Elena’s waist. Elena’s hands trembled violently as she clutched the green corporate binder against her chest, her eyes wide with terror.
"You wouldn't dare touch my daughter," Elena hissed, stepping out from behind Daniel.
"Elena, darling, you were always a liability," Vance replied, his smile slipping into a cold, predatory smirk. He nodded slightly to the operative on his left. "Secure the binder and put the parents down. Make it look like an internal struggle over service weapons."
The operative raised his carbine, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Daniel moved with blinding speed, lunging forward and sweeping his leg across the concrete floor, kicking a heavy steel footstool directly into the shins of the advancing gunman. The operative stumbled backward, his rifle discharging into the concrete ceiling in a deafening roar of fire and flying shrapnel.
Simultaneously, Daniel fired two rapid shots into the wall beside Vance’s head, shattering a fluorescent housing and plunging the corridor into sudden, chaotic darkness.
"Run!" Daniel screamed, grabbing Elena’s arm and shoving her and Sophie toward the rear emergency exit chute located at the back of the archive vault.

Shots chewed through the darkness, ricocheting off the metal shelving units as the second operative opened blind fire into the vault room. Daniel returned suppressive fire toward the muzzle flashes, retreating backward into the narrow emergency exit tunnel while pulling the heavy steel fire door shut and engaging the interior deadbolt mechanism.
