Chapter 14 - The Final Ascent to Light

The emergency exit chute was a steep, vertical metal ladder enclosed in a concrete silo that rose six stories straight up to the street-level exit behind the courthouse steps. Daniel pushed Elena and Sophie up the first flight of rungs, his own arms burning with exhaustion from hours of continuous adrenaline and physical trauma.

"Keep climbing! Don't look down!" Daniel urged, pushing Sophie gently from behind as she scrambled upward with surprising agility, her light blue dress fluttering in the upward draft of fresh air.

Below them, the sound of heavy metal impacts echoed up the silo shaft. Vance’s contractors were using a hydraulic breaching tool to tear through the reinforced fire door they had just locked. The screech of tearing steel pierced the concrete tube like fingernails on a chalkboard.

"They're cutting through!" Elena gasped, pausing on a mid-level landing to catch her breath.

"Move!" Daniel yelled, redoubling his pace as he practically carried Sophie up the final three flights of rungs toward the heavy steel street-level hatch at the top.

Reaching the top, Daniel slammed his shoulder against the latch mechanism of the overhead hatch. It was locked from the outside by a heavy padlock.

"Step back, Soph! Cover your ears!" Daniel ordered, drawing his Glock and pressing the muzzle directly against the steel shackle of the padlock.

He fired three rapid rounds into the mechanism. The lock shattered with a shower of sparks, and Daniel shoved the heavy iron hatch upward with all his remaining strength.

Bright, blinding morning sunlight poured into the dark silo shaft, accompanied by the distant wail of approaching sirens. It wasn't local police sirens; it was the unmistakable, deep-throated wail of federal marshal transport vehicles.

Daniel hoisted Sophie out of the hatch first, lifting her onto the sunlit stone steps of the federal courthouse plaza, followed closely by Elena. As Daniel pulled himself out into the crisp morning air, he blinked against the sudden glare.

Standing at the top of the courthouse steps, surrounded by a dozen armed federal marshals and special agents in dark suits, was the Chief Federal Prosecutor holding an open grand jury docket book.
