Chapter 2 - The Envelope Beneath the Floorboards

The front door clicked shut, muffling the wails of Elena being loaded into the squad car. The sudden silence in the hallway felt heavy, suffocating. Daniel knelt back down beside Sophie, his hands trembling as he reached for the manila envelope resting on the hardwood floorboards near the heating vent. The tape sealing the flap was old, yellowed, and cracked at the edges.
"Sophie, sweetheart, look at me," Daniel whispered, his voice strained as he tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear, careful not to disturb her pink clips. "Did your mother put this here?"
Sophie shook her head slowly, her blue eyes wide and luminous with unreleased tears. "No, Daddy. Mommy hid it when the mailman came yesterday. She said if I told anyone, the bad men would take you away forever."
Daniel carefully slid his thumb beneath the cracked tape, peeling back the heavy cardstock. Inside lay a stack of folded documents, polaroid photographs, and a microcassette tape labeled with a date from three years ago—long before their separation, back when they still lived under the illusion of a happy family. He pulled out the topmost photograph and felt the breath leave his lungs entirely.
It was a picture of Elena standing in this very hallway, holding a legal document with a signature block bearing Daniel’s name. But the signature was shaky, forged in black ink that didn't match his handwriting. Beneath it were medical bills from a private clinic three towns over, detailing psychiatric evaluations that Daniel had never authorized, let alone seen.
"What else did she tell you, Soph?" Daniel asked, his voice barely above a murmur as he tried to steady his racing pulse.
Sophie reached out and pointed a tiny finger at the back of the photograph. "She talked to the man on the phone. The one with the loud car. She told him the plan was working and that you were signing your rights away without even knowing it."
Daniel flipped the photograph over. Scrawled across the back in Elena’s sharp, cursive handwriting was a name and a phone number he recognized instantly: Marcus Vance, the wealthy family court attorney who had recently represented Elena in their preliminary custody hearings. Marcus wasn't just a lawyer; he was a man with deep, corrupt ties to the local municipal court system.

Before Daniel could process the implications, his department-issued radio crackled to life on his utility belt, cutting through the silence. Dispatch announced that Elena’s booking had hit an immediate snag at the precinct, as a high-ranking judge had just issued an emergency stay, ordering her release within the hour.
