What Julian and his mother had deliberately ignored during their three years of marriage was that Elena had never been "nobody."
Before she set aside her dreams to care for Julian’s ailing mother, Elena was an award-winning architectural restorer who had graduated at the top of her class from MIT.
With Arthur's backing, Elena declined the Sterling corporate salary. Instead, she took charge of the St. Jude Heritage Project—a rundown historical district that the Sterling board had intended to bulldoze for high-end luxury condos.
"They want to tear down history to build empty monuments for the rich," Elena told Arthur over morning tea at the lakehouse. "I want to restore it into a community center, affordable art spaces, and a shelter for mothers in need."

For the first time in years, Elena pulled out her drafting table and pencils. The late-night tears that once stained her pillows were replaced by the satisfying scent of graphite, tracing paper, and purpose.
