THE WEIGHT OF WATER / Chapter 15 / 15

The Ocean Within

Three years after that fateful dinner, Elena stood at the edge of the lake beneath the warm morning sun.

Maya, now a bright, curious four-year-old with sparkling eyes, ran through the tall green grass, chasing a golden monarch butterfly with pure, unrestrained laughter.

A light summer shower began to fall, pattering gently against the surface of the water, creating concentric circles of crystal light.

In the past, rain had been a symbol of cold humiliation, of ice water dumped out of malice, of tears shed in silent rooms.

Now, Elena tipped her head back, feeling the warm drops land softly against her skin. She took a deep, liberating breath.

"Mommy! Look! A rainbow!" Maya squealed, pointing a tiny finger across the horizon where the sun pierced through the rain clouds in a blaze of gold and sapphire.

Elena smiled, wrapping her arms around her daughter as they looked out together at the vast, open world before them.

Water could be poured to humiliate, but when met with grace, courage, and truth, it could also nourish the deepest roots of the human soul, giving rise to something unbreakable, beautiful, and everlasting.
