The Burden of Forgiveness

"I saw the news," Julian continued, looking down at his calloused hands. "You did something incredible here, Elena. I'm sorry for everything I took away from you."

Elena leaned against the cedar rail, watching the moonlight ripple across the river.

"You didn't take anything from me, Julian," she answered gently. "You only revealed who I was capable of becoming."

"Do you hate me?" he asked, his voice cracking with genuine remorse.

"Hate takes too much energy, and I need every bit of mine to build a future for our daughter," Elena said. "I forgive you, Julian. Not for your sake, but for mine. Because carrying resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die."

Julian closed his eyes, a solitary tear cutting a path down his dust-streaked cheek. For the first time, he felt truly free of his own shallow past.

"Can I... can I see her someday?" he whispered. "Not as an heir. Just as someone who wants to learn how to be a father?"

"When you have finished rebuilding yourself," Elena replied with calm kindness. "The door will be open."
