The Sanctuary by the Lake

The black town car drove through the iron gates of the estate and turned north, away from the glittering, shallow skyline of the city.

Elena leaned back against the leather seat, one hand resting gently over the rise of her pregnant belly. Her unborn child stirred—a tiny, rhythmic flutter beneath her palm.

Waiting on the porch under the warm yellow lantern light was Arthur himself, leaning on a polished walnut cane, beside his lifelong housekeeper, Martha.

As Elena stepped out, Martha immediately rushed forward, wrapping a warm cashmere blanket around her shivering shoulders.
